Sweeney Todd a Gruesome Critical Darling

sweeney_todd.jpg

The new Tim Burton film, which opens nationwide today, has been almost universally loved by critics, although it’s supposed to be one of the darkest, most gruesome films ever made.

Says the NY Times:

Mr. Burton’s film adaptation of Mr. Sondheim’s musical, is as dark and terrifying as any motion picture in recent memory, not excluding the bloody installments in the “Saw” franchise…It is cruel in its effects and radical in its misanthropy, expressing a breathtakingly, rigorously pessimistic view of human nature. It is also something close to a masterpiece…What you see is as dark as the grave. What you hear — some of the finest stage music of the past 40 years — is equally infernal, except that you might just as well call it heavenly.

Man, I thought I’d go see this film, but gorier than Saw? I’m not sure if I can handle that.

  • Leave BEET ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just watched the 1997 version of Sweeny Todd with Sir Ben Kingsley as Sweeny and Joanna Lumley as his partner… you all remember Joanna Lumley from Absolutely Fabulous in the 90’s She was Edina’s Patsy!!!

Great Show by the way I lived my life like those 2 lushes for 3 years, and it was the best 3 years of my life.

  • This movie would be soooooooo much better…

…if Johnnie got HIS throat slashed before the opening credits quit rolling.

  • Im not even goin to see the movie
    Im going to see him!

even though he could like be my daad
    he’s still extremly hott!!
loved him in POTC and I still love him noww

  • Truly bizarre. I saw the movie and feel it should have gotten an X-rating instead of R for violence. Definitely not for the kiddies or those easily influenced to violence.

Murder, canabalism, wanton violence, misanthropy, revenge gone wrong… what more could one ask for during the Christmas season.? Even Shakespeare would enjoy this movie.

I love Depp as an actor and he did a great job but this movie was too much for me – especially the gratutitous throat slashing.
