When Was The Last Time We Got to See a Totally Sexist RomCom, Anyway?

Summit Entertainment, the production company that arguably ruined your teenagers lives with the Twilight trilogy, has just acquired the rights to the now-classic relationship self-help book, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus by Dr. John Gray. I smell a goofy bullshit romcom with tons of klutzy and/or uptight lady characters and emotionally unavailable male leads! You know, He’s Just Not That Into You 2: The Re-Into-ing.

Here’s my question, though: How are they going to make this into a movie without facing the same criticism that the book has received? The most common opinion I’ve heard on the book (which I have not personally read, to be fair) is that the relationship advice is solid, but only if you’re willing to accept that men and women are coming from two entirely different places both mentally and emotionally. Was Summit really just buying the book’s title, which is engraved in all of our heads forever and ever, or is their next purchase going to be the rights to The Rules?

  • “he most common opinion I’ve heard on the book (which I have not personally read, to be fair) is that the relationship advice is solid, but only if you’re willing to accept that men and women are coming from two entirely different places both mentally and emotionally. ”

I don’t get why that would be a criticism?

And how the heck is something like that sexism. I’m so sick and tired of feminists wanting to claim that men and women are the same.

I read the book and it is only underlining the obvious differences in men and women( that we see and experience everyday) and helping them learn how to better relate to one another.

Saying men and women are different is not saying we are not equals. To deny the differences is to short change out own sex and deny the differences that make us awesome – that is real girl-power!

  • I’m inclined to agree with Melissa here. Unless you dig the same music, same cars, same taste in clothes, movies, favorite era, etc., I’m gonna have to diagram all that out so a woman can understand where I’m coming from. So, in general, yes, we come from very very different places. But, the woman who takes the time to make the time to understand me will generally get reciprocation. Or, they can intuitively understand from the very beginning. This is very rare indeed.

    Really.

  • Read the book. It is spot on and very helpful. Not perfect, but really good.

There are legit criticisms of the book, the one you site, Molls, is not one I have ever heard. No need for me to go into them here….suffice to say, men and women are different.

I don’t actually know anyone who would say they are the same.

  • I don’t know how you could think men and women AREN’T different, of course they are haven’t you ever been in a grown up relationship?

  • (Twilight is not a trilogy.)

My example for the ” goofy bullshit romcom with tons of klutzy and/or uptight lady characters and emotionally unavailable male leads” would have been The Ugly Truth. But yeah, there’re already a few of those… So why not make one more?

I don’t get why people got so aggressive about this post… But yes, men and women are different. I think that that’s why this subject is a source for so many books / films etc – because there’s truth in that. There’s the difference, and making fun of that is – for some – funny.

  • I liked the movie he is just not that into you and I am excited for this one too! And i also liked twilight. This movies aren’t supposed to win Oscars just entertain you when you just want to watch something “light” and don’t have to think too much.. and if you don’t have to read the book… even better! :):)

  • Your refusal to accept and hyper-criticism of this book is probably why you’re single.

Men and women are different. If you don’t want to believe that, I hope your apartment complex allows cats.
