It’s not news that PETA uses some pretty immature tactics to get across their pro-animal/anti-fur message, but I am shocked by some of the statements they made about the stars who topped their Worst Dressed List this year. Basically, all you had to do to be a contender is wear fur or skins and so, as you can imagine, real fashion experts probably wouldn’t put these women on any such list.
PETA talked to Access Hollywood about their rankings and gave statements on each person who made the list. While they aren’t exactly the rudest things I’ve ever read (that would be pretty hard to do), they certainly didn’t sound too professional. Here’s a run down:
On their #1 Worst Dressed, Catherine Zeta-Jones: “With her creepy cow-skin pants, ugly fox coat, and icky alligator bag, Catherine Zeta-Jones looks like she’s working her way through Noah’s ark with a knife. Maybe she’s trying to get into character for an upcoming role as a serial killer — or a taxidermist.”
On Kate Hudson: “Kate, there’s no easier way to lose a guy in 10 days than by wearing a hairball. Maybe your furs are the reason why A-Rod ran for home.”
On Jill Zarin: “This ‘Real Housewife’ lives in the Big Apple, and her furry fashion sense is rotten to the core.”
They also said that Jessica Simpson’s clothing is as dead as her acting career and called out J.Lo for her “corpse coats”. Look, I don’t think that wearing fur is right, but attacking people’s careers and love lives to make a point about their clothing choices? Whack and kind of pointless if you ask me. And I say that as someone who makes a living being a jerk.
“And I say that as someone who makes a living being a jerk.”
Glad to see you acknowledge the hypocrisy of your argument. At least PETA are being assholes for a good cause rather than profit. Either way, it’s a sad indictment of our society that being mean and catty is not only accepted, but rewarded (and I know that I am contributing to the problem by going to gossip sites – I’m a hypocrite, too).
As for the fur-wearers, unless they’re poor and cannot afford heating, or they live in Antarctica, they are vain assholes. It’s not the same as leather or eating meat. Fur is a whole other ballgame given the living (or dying) conditions of the slaughtered animals, as well as the number of animals killed to make each garment.
Right on!
I disagree that wearing fur is not the same as wearing leather or eating meat. The living (and dying) conditions of cows/bulls (and chickens, pigs, turkeys, etc.) are horrific from birth to slaughter.
If PETA is “immature” about spreading their message, it doesn’t bother me. Many people rightly have a conniption fit if somebody somewhere eats a dog or tortures a cat, but their care for animal welfare often includes only those two species. If you buy animal products (meat, milk, eggs, etc.), you are feeding an industry that inflicts round-the-clock pain and suffering for millions of animals on any given day. Don’t believe me? Watch all 13 minutes of “Meet Your Meat” on the Internet.
Wearing leather and eating meat are choices, not a requirement for a healthy and happy life if you live in a developed country.
You’re preaching to the choir! One thing at a time, though.
So it’s OK to make snarky, insulting comments about celebrities when you write for a gossip site, but it’s not OK under other circumstances.
Molls, with this level of hypocrisy, you should consider working as a communications representative for a Republican member of congress. You might actually be good at that.
Gossip bloggers and gigantic nonprofit organizations are in totally different ballparks. I’m surprised that PETA wants to be associated with such snark, it makes them come off as tacky – and as much as I support fair treatment of animals – I would rather support an organization more focused on proactive outreach than reactive insults.
PETA sucks big
At least the animals used for fur coats die for some intelligible reason. PETA kill the animals they “liberate” for no reason at all. That’s right, as long as you claim to be a do-gooder you can get away with murder.
huh?
What a dick.
PETA has really been turning me off lately…ever since they decided to lean towards the ‘sex sells’ approach of getting their message out there. I am much more affected by the sad animal commercials that usually have a Sarah McLachlan song playing and seeing the poor animals that have suffered so much. Personally I could care less about celebrities and how they dress, I do not desire to buy or wear fur because someone else is wearing it.
Is the chick in the OP really KZJ? Damn, if I had ears like that I would not be hanging iron ingots off them with my hair pulled tighter than horse hair on a violin bow. Really, PETA should get it priorities in proper order.
Ok, I totally thought that was JWOWW in the pic, not Katherine Zeta-Jones!
Anyone who dpses naked for PETA is STARK RAVING STUPID
Check out this stupid video PETA made: http://meat.org
Well, I am against killing animals as well but somehow, I find that fur coat above cool. Still, they shouldn’t judge clothes on that basis.
