“Fat” Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey in October of 2009 (left) and April 2009 (right)

This is one of those times I want to give the finger the the general gossip blogosphere.

Jim Carrey is deliberately packing on the pounds to play Curly in the The Three Stooges, which begins filming later this year. He’s attempting to go from his usual weight of 170lbs all the way up to 300 lbs or more- which sounds absolutely insane, and can’t be good for his health.

But all gossip websites get out of this is “OMG. Jim Carrey is like, sooooo fat now.”

First of all, he hasn’t even gained that much weight yet. While he’s certainly chunkier in the current photo on the left, he’s nowhere near the bloated bag of pus some sites would have you think he’s turned into.

Secondly, he’s putting his health on the line for the sake of a role. While that’s questionable in terms of personal safety and well-being, it’s admirable in terms of dedication to his craft.

If you want to talk about something, talk about the questionable practice of actors and actresses hurriedly putting on tons of weight to play some roles and dropping down to anorexic levels for others. Don’t just focus on the fact that this famous person has gotten “like, soooo fat.’

  • Most other blogs are stupid. If they haven’t realised by now that it’s for his role as Curly then they’re idiots.

On the other hand… why the heck can’t they give him a fatsuit? Prosthetics and whatnot are so advanced now. But maybe he also thinks it’s fun to get to eat as much as he wants. :) As long as he’s OK with it, then I haven’t got a problem with it!

We should be focusing more on Christian Bale… going from total stud in Batman to that creepy drug addict for his new movie. Now THAT is a problem… especially since it’s not the first time he’s gone from one extreme to another. (I think last time he lost all that wait for the Machinist and then bulked up like crazy for Batman.)

    • I was just going to post about Christian Bale’s extreme weight loss and gains. I think what he has done is way more harmful than what Jim Carrey is doing. But since Christian was getting skinnier, I guess it was okay and can be considered “suffering for your art.”

honestly, i doubt Carrey will be 300 pounds.

  • I don’t see how a thin man such as Jim Carrey could possibly gain 130 lbs and have no negative side effects. However, I can’t help but point out that dedication like this is not uncommon. There are a lot of people (if you don’t know one, you are one) who stay at the office late and wake up early in the morning to go back to work on only three or four hours’ sleep. This kind of behavior is just as detrimental to one’s health as quickly putting on a lot of weight, but it’s less noticeable because the effects aren’t immediately visible.

On a more positive note, I think Jim Carrey’s beard is grizzly, manly and hot.

  • Wow, I can understand them wanting him to put on a few just to make his face look rounder, then use a fat suit for his body, but making him put on ALL that weight is totally unhealthy! There is rapidly gaining 20-30 pounds but doubling your body size? That just seems irresponsible.

  • Can you imagine the stretch marks from gainin and losing weight that fast? Totally insane idea to do this.

  • Actors are supposed to physically inhabit a role. It is their job, for which they are paid handsomely. For their ART. It is Absurd when they mess up their faces and bodies with cosmetic surgery to continue to look young. That is a MUCH WORSE health consequence than packing on a few pounds for a role. The logic of this jacked up youth culture is obscene.

    • Are you a troll or just a fucking idiot? He’s nearly DOUBLING his weight. Going from 170 to 300 lbs is not just “packing on a few bounds.” Jesus.

    • Actually gaining and losing weight can dramatically impact your health possibly way more than getting a nose job. They have fat suits and computer graphics for a reason.. oh and they have already fat actors.. just saying.

  • Actually I think The Machinist came first for Bale, who lost all that weight by smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, then turned around and went from literally looking like a corpse to the very dreamy, muscular Bruce Wayne. Still, they speculated he probably took a few years off his life from that (Though I hope not).

Renee Zellweger did it for 2 Bridget Jones movies and its harder for women to lose weight actually (though 30lbs is no where near as drastic as the, oh, idk, 100ish lbs Bale did and Carey is doing). Shes opted for a body suit for the third and I cant say I blame her.

Its really hard on your heart, losing or gaining that much weight that fast. (added by Mobile using Mippin)

  • I love Jim Carrey!!! I actually just showed my kids the second Ace Ventura and I still have stomach cramps from laughing so hard! I hope he’s not actually gonna try to gain a 100 lbs!!! That would be really really bad for him and I want him to be around a lot longer! Hopefully it’s just a rumor and maybe he is only going to try to gain some weight, but not as much as everyone things he will. I mean they pulled it off very well in Dr. Doolittle and I also thought the Gwenyth Paltrow fat suit in Shallow Hal was also VERY believable. I hope he realizes he doesn’t have to do this….

  • That is a dumber than dumb (ha!) move for him to make.

He is putting so much at risk for himself by gaining all of that weight. He’s around 47, and should know that dropping that kind of weight wont be an easy feat. I dont care who says what.

Nevermind the risk of diabetes, heart disease, heart attack…yeah, all that is worth it for a movie role.

    Moron.

  • I wouldn’t say the practice of putting on weight for a role is “questionable,” I’d say it’s flat-out stupid. Especially when it’s 130 pounds. It’s got nothing to do with dedication to the craft, it’s obsessive behavior. There’s got to be another actor out there who can play Curley without gaining a ton of weight.
