Bruno Tops the Box Office!

I saw Bruno last night in New York City. Since it’s an 88-minute movie, it was showing about every 45 minutes in damn near every theater in Manhattan. We had hoped to go to the 9:05 showing, but that was sold out, in addition to the 9:45 and the 10:05. We managed to get tickets for the 10:25, in a theater the size of a small basketball stadium. Which was packed. The audience was screaming with laughter the entire time. Throughout the movie, I just kept turning to my friends and saying “Oh my God.” Those were the only words I had. That and “Oh no.”

So it’s no surprise that the film topped the box office this weekend, although I’m a little surprised to hear it only brought in $30.4M, with only $9M of that on Saturday (a 37% drop from Friday’s numbers). I was expecting larger numbers, but I guess I forgot that the whole world isn’t exactly as open-minded as the Lower East Side. I’m sure once word got out about some of the more, uh, explicit moments in the film (I won’t give away details), people in other parts of the country decided to give the film a pass.

Still, it’s exceeding studio predictions, and it’s on track to do better than Borat. Congrats, Sacha.

    • I didn’t know she was preggers! I thought the dish was that she was the daughter of the plastic surgeon that gave Kate her tummy tuck! Both are juicy though, and show how much of a douche-nozzle Jon is.

      • Ok, I guess she isnt preggers There was a pic on Just Jared where she looked pregnant so a lot of us were pretty certain. Hopefully she was bloated because now there is a new picture of her on Oh No they didnt and she and Jon are smoking….. Did he smoke with Kate? I dont think so. Seriously she should have castrated to prevent him having any more offspring that he cant support.

    • can we just have some actual, consistent posting? and what happened to Kelly? Is she taking another weekend off? I’m pretty dissapointed with this site in general. I come here a couple times a day and basically spend more time reading the comments than the posts since commenters are actually interested in writing about these things and adding more info. shieet didn’t know jon gosselins gf was preggers! man that guy is screwed. i don’t want to have to keep going back to perez but its kind of my only choice now that and tmz but they are no where as good as beet USED to be. she’s sold out now and has bigger priorities like selling out and vacationing instead of keeping what is allowing her to do that steady. tsk tsk

    I LOVE how Austrians are complaining that Bruno is “ruining their reputation”. That, coming from the country that gave us Adolf Hitler & Josef Fritzl. Love it. :’D

      • yes! the sound of music…love it. mr. quirky works with the guy who played “kurt” in the movie and when i met him at the company holiday party i just bugged him about the movie, poor guy. he said julie andrews was really nice and they had lots of fun on location with all the kids. what other good things from austria? yummy pastries, and schnitzel, too. i like austria – i’ve been for a visit and thought it was lovely. so ignore the ignorant ramblings about nazis from the above poster. just trying to stir the shit.

  • I saw this last night.
    It was insane.
    It’s true all you can say a lot of the time is “Oh my God”.
    It was the most offensive and hilarious movie I’ve seen in a long time.

  • I saw it opening night as one of the few breeders in the audience. The most offensive parts were actually the would-be child star parents agreeing to let their children be in all sorts of dangerous ads. SBC has incredible courage to go to some of the places he does where he obviously risks physical harm. I couldn’t stop laughing at the swingers party! I thought Bruno was funnier that Borat, actually, and less offensive. The types of people he spoofs in this movie aren’t likely to see it anyway, I want a onesie that says “gayby” for my kid!

    • Yes that part with the parents agreeing to let their children be harmed was sad, very sad. When those children are older they’re totally going to be pimped out to pedo producers.

      • i haven’t seen the movie (and won’t – i just don’t think he’s funny) – what were the parents agreeing to have done to their kids to be in a movie?

  • I didn’t realize it was this weekend! Maybe others did too and that’s why sales were so low. I’m sure the number will climb higher though when people start talking more and spreading the word. It’s too good to miss.

  • I think the promotion of Bruno is out of control. You are being paid to promote it im guessing. Right?

      • Yea but i dont like that kind of advertising. She makes it into a article and acts like shes giving an unbiased review, like were too stupid to realize that the main reason shes doing it is because they are paying her.

      • You are right, It’s obvious that she is giving a good review of the movie because she is promoting it. In my case, I don’t feel like going to see that movie. Its not because the controversy or anything, I’m just not a big fan of Sacha. I don’t think he is that funny. But I’m just saying, please, don’t kill me Brüno fans!

      • FIIIIINALLY!!! I think Sacha Cohen is a self-hating jew who probably also a closeted homosexual. When you leave the theatre, you feel as guilty and dirty as if you’d just watched some gay porn. I don’t think that the shock value of showing gratuitous penises is funny. Such a bad movie and such a bunch a retards calling it “hilarious”

  • I’ve been waiting for Bruno for months: I even took off work early so I could make the final showing on opening day. I definitely wasn’t disappointed. I expected more over-the-top, outrageous laughs, and Sacha Baron Cohen delivered. He’s fucking brilliant. And yeah, the scene with the parents willing to let their kids go through pretty much anything just to get a gig was hilarious…I hope someone shows them this movie and that they promptly turn their kids over to the authorities.

    • The scene of the parents being interviewed is obviously edited and they actually did a bad job at it if you pay close attention

  • I’m super psyched for Bruno! It looks hilarious with just the right amount of disgusting.

    BTW Please tell me you’ve seen Hayden Panettiere’s GQ shot and her clearly enhanced bikini top. Completely ridiculous.

  • Saw it. It was definitely funny but any other movie would have gotten an NC-17 and this one should have also.

    • They cut a lot of scenes out to get the R rating.
      I was also pretty surprised how much they let them get away with though.

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS MOVIE!!! i couldn’t breathe at the end of his tv pilot, the swingers party, the camping scene…you get the point. i dont think ive laughed so hard at a movie in my entire lifeee. i was literally crying. i cannot wait to buy this on DVD.

  • Don’t believe the hype! This movie is nowhere near as good as Borat. There were some hilarious moments, but the trailers ruined the best parts for me (as usual). A lot of the jokes fell flat. I do appreciate his cojones – he puts himself in harm’s way and I cannot believe he hasn’t gotten the shit beat out of him yet!

    • I agree. The funniest parts in Borat were the ones where Sacha let people make asses out of themselves. In Bruno it was just him acting ridiculous.

      • The movie is hilarious in the same way that Perez Hilton is entertaining. They put other people in a position where they are easily mockable for their profit.. Perez got punched in the face and cried like a bitch and I don’t doubt that Cohen will get beaten and also cry like a bitch

  • horrible. i was SO pumped to see this movie. big let down. borat far exceed bruno. i told everyone i know to wait til it comes out on DVD – and even then, only rent it at redbox as the movie is not worth a $5 blockbuster rental.
