  • I reacted the same way George Takei, I guess, just astonished that some same-sex couples have equal civil rights and others never will.

    And speaking of “domestic partnerships”: I’d lived with my boyfriend in California long enough that we qualified as ‘married’ under that law. So I’d just like to point out that that benefit is a far cry from “able to get married.”

    Still. I just read this really oddball column, proclaiming that today’s decision was “a spectacular decision in favor of gay rights.”

  • Should Kim’s opinion even matter? Seriously.

    The Cali.Sup.Ct’s hands were tied in making this decision – even if they do not agree with Prop 8 they can’t interject their personal opinion into their holding. Prop 8 was legally passed and therefore the Court had to uphold it. Individuals who do not agree with Prop 8 need to get to work…get an initiative on the ballot that would allow for same-sex marriage…then let Californians vote on it.

    I must admit when I heard the decision this afternoon I was shocked, I didn’t think the Cali.Sup.Ct had it in them! Secondly, I was eager to come by EB to see what you girls had to say on the topic. While I do fall into the majority of people who support Prop 8 I do appreciate reading all of your opinions on the subject (sometimes it goes too far, but that is neither here nor there).

    • I very much agree with you here. The scope of their decision making power is slight enough that they could not make any other decision.

      I think it’s horribly unfortunate that the voters of CA believed that there should be a ban on same-sex marriage, but it was a legal ban. Do I think it was an unconstitutional ban and violated the equal protection clause? Yes I do. But until the US Supreme Court agrees with me, my opinion doesn’t really matter. It’s very sad, but unfortunately some forms of discrimination are still legal in the US.

  • So I guess what Miss Califorina said wasn’t that bad after all, since the State of California agreed with her. I think the majority the people in this country are right on this one. Civil Unions are ok but Marriage is for a MAN and WOMAN (period)

      • I am not a religious person in the least, and I don’t care for the Bible, but it does state that marriage is between a man and a woman. Seeing as how this country was founded on religion/God, I feel that it should be respected, regardless of my beliefs. That’s all.

      • This country was founded on the basis of religious freedom. That was actually the very reason people came here-to escape religious oppression. Separation of church and state is not some new concept being thrown around. It was supposed to be the underlying concept behind the way the country was founded and run. That’s why denying a minority civil rights based primarily on religious beliefs is so troubling. Did you fail US history?

Better question, what on EARTH would a celebrity know about the Supreme Court in general!!?? Please don’t peddle crap to us like the “opinion” of a celebrity on something as relevant and historically important as who the next justice will be. It is literally insulting.

    • Even Newsweek has a ‘quotes’ page in each issue, and it is customarily littered with celebrity opinions. Everyone is free to opine.

    UGHHHH SERIOUSLY WITH THE CHILDREN AGAIN. So sick of hearing that. Not letting gay people get married won’t make them go away. Your kid will still learn what gay is eventually. Fucking idiots. I hope all their kids are gay.

      Lovely. But, they probably won’t be, because growing up with two involved parents who model appropriate gender roles and loving married behaviour is a powerful factor that predisposes against the gender confusion that leads to being being “homosexual”. Do the research, people. Start with Michael Bailey. It must be terrible to feel that you can only find personal and sexual fulfillment in an unnatural relationship, and these people deserve our sympathy and compassion. Encouraging them to indulge in self-destructive behaviour is about as supportive and kind as voting for a proposition to provide free booze to alcoholics.

      • First, how do you explain it when gay people come from households with two loving and involved parents who model “appropriate gender roles” and still end up being gay?
        By your previous argument, it seems you think this would be impossible. When we all know that gay people come from many different households just like heterosexual people do. How often do you see gay parents with gay children? By your argument this would happen a LOT more frequently.

      • Being gay is not the result of upbringing just like being heterosexual isn’t either. Do you feel like your parents CAUSED you to be straight? I highly doubt that.

        Second, being gay is not “unnatural”. I find it astonishing that you can be comfortable with suggesting such a thing.

        We are in the year 2009 and we still cannot respect our fellow HUMAN BEINGS by accepting them for who they are? Seriously?!

      • JR, would you kindly provide us with the “research” that you’ve done to come to your conclusion? I’ve done my “research” first hand, by meeting actual family members of my gay friends and finding out the spectrum of environments they’ve grown up in. So “do your research” is an EPIC FAIL in your argument.

        Second of all, instead of all of those Sunday School classes you took, wouldn’t it have helped your “research” if you also took 4 year college courses in Anthropology, Biology, and World history? From science, (I know, science, blah blah blah) you’ll learn that homosexuality is found in nearly all mammals, including those who mate for life. In Anthropology, perhaps you’ll actually come to see that “Gender” is a social construct with a fluid meaning from each culture, time period, around the world – for 2,000 years.

        But an holistic education… bah. Who needs it, right? When you can just dig up articles by equally fearful Christians who only want to find a poorly written, poorly researched article to support their case.

        2) The current theory (there is still no definitive answer) involves that period when the fetus is injected with hormones by the placenta, during the period when the sex of the baby is determined.

      • Let me help you understand their thought process. There is only so long they can continue to paint homosexuals as perverse people that choose homosexuality like they choose BDSM or pegging. So the underlying message of the kids thing = homosexuals will either (1) convert your children to the church of “gayism” or (2) rape them because homosexuality is one shade away from pedophilia and incest, (btw this is what’s been popping up lately on political blogs I frequent — this word) beastiology.

  • Ummm, I believe the people of California HAVE SPOKEN. We don’t want gay marriage legalized here as anyone can tell from the vote on 11/4…let it go already or move to Iowa.

    • Some of the people in California have spoken. In fact, a slim majority of people in California have spoken. I think if you’re the one that’s going to have to move, because nobody is letting it go. Gay marriage is going to happen. Because it’s a civil right. People very rarely drop issues of this magnitude.

    How are anyone’s civil rights protected by this “victory” ?????? When you’re a bigoted git, the less said the better
