Tom Hanks went and PO’d the Mormons. At the premiere for “Big Love” last week Tom told Fox News exactly how he felt about the passing of Prop-8 in California.
“The truth is this takes place in Utah, the truth is these people are some bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church, and the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen,” he told Tarts. “There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here’s what happens now. A little bit of light can be shed, and people can see who’s responsible, and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting Constitution, and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let’s have faith in not only the American, but Californian, constitutional process.”
After some in the Mormon Community got a tad indignant over the comments, Tom issued the standard “semi-retraction” and backpedaled a bit.
“Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California’s Proposition 8 as ‘un-American,'” the actor said in a statement through his publicist. “I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination.”
“But everyone has a right to vote their conscience; nothing could be more American,” the statement continues. “To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are ‘un-American’ creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use ‘un- American’ lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have.”
Did everyone know that Tom Hanks was a Producer for “Big Love” on HBO? Do you think it was necessary for him to clarify his original statement? I don’t know what rules Mormans have about TV and more importantly, HBO, but I wouldn’t think that they’re the people watching this. What say you?

Mormons are weird, and providing they practise polygamy, I am not very sure they are entitled to speak about traditional marriage.
The Mormon church doesn’t officially practice polygamy. They used to, and there are offshoots that still do, but the vast majority don’t.

I am a huge fan of the show. It’s intriguing and entertaining. It does shed some light on the differences in beliefs within the Mormons themselves.
And regardless of what un-PC term Hanks used, I agree with him 100%.

They are still people, everyone. They can use their money for anything they want to and they can vote too. It’s part of the democratic process and they had every right to do what they did. And all kinds of other churches donated to Prop. 8 and no one criticizes their beliefs or calls their churches cults.
I agree. Besides that, they were denied their right to practice polygamy, which is definitely part of their religion. They changed the practice under pressure.

As far as Mormonism goes, they had great commercials as a kid. Anyone remember “Who Broke My Window?” with Alphonso Ribero?! I’m embarrassed to admit I still know ALL the damn words! However, just a tip to all the door-knocking troops, if you want me to answer the door then: (a) don’t knock on Sunday during football, and (b) wear a disguise of some sort (maybe carry a vacuum?) because the short sleeve suit is a dead giveaway.

And mormons who practise polygamy are not members of the LDS church. They belong to FLDS, clans or they are independet. So it’s wrong to say All mormons practise polygamy when the majority doesn’t.
Even if I do not agree with anyone who votes for prop 8, mormons, christians, muslims, jews.. who cares what they label themselfs as. they have a right to vote, and I have the right to disagree.
So back to mormons who vote no for prop 8. You’d think people who have been as discriminated as they were during the 19th century, at times even slaughtered, would vote for something that discriminates anyone. They should know better. But then again, as history tells us, sometimes the discriminated becomes the.. discrimators? Is that even a word? Too bad he’s such a fucking tool. I question his intellectual honesty, or I would had he displayed any, by not attacking the better-liked proponents of Proposition 8, such as the African-American churches and Latino Catholic parishioners who voted in favor of it by more than 2 to 1. Proposition 8 was a bad idea, and as a Mormon, I’ve never understood why the “defenders” of “traditional marriage”, whatever is meant by that, felt so threatened by gays and lesbians deciding to wed. First, by the weird evangelical definition, gays and lesbians would never be capable of participating in so-called “traditional” marriage. Second, what about infidelity, spousal and child abuse, drug abuse, alcoholism, a lack of maturity when entering the marriage, and simply growing apart that are ACTUAL threats to marriage? Something like 40%+ of all marriages end in divorce. Those marriages do not end in divorce because of gays and lesbians.
Since I am unfamiliar with the rules of this website, I will self-censor a bit. My closing comment is this: I would rather be water-boarded with the Teletubbies playing in the background than listen to another single thing that this pompous gasbag has to say. Calling people “un-American” is a McCarthyistic thing to do, and is, ironically, the most “un-American” thing of all. Oh, and Big Love sucks. Congratulations, Tom Hanks, on your spectacular fail.

Well, the hard thing is that I myself am Mormon, along with many others who have liberal views and we did not support the campaign nor want to be associated with it. Yes, we are normal, we watch TV and I read Evil Beat religiously. I’ve always loved Tom Hanks and it sucks to have to be associated with those in my religion that contributed money to the Prop 8 thing. In a nut shell, I totally understand why people are upset with the Mormon church and why Tom said what he did, so I wasn’t offended. I also watch Big Love, mostly because it is so incorrectly associated with the mainstream Mormon church and is funny to watch them try to make those assumptions and screw them up royally. All in all, it was nice to have some sort of apology from Tom, hopefully he realizes that not all mainstream Mormons are ultra-conservative and anti-gay and have thirteen wives. One can only hope ;)

I don’t like when people in the public eye make statements that are untrue….like when Mr. Hanks said, “the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen”. While members of the LDS church may have made contributions to support prop-8, they didn’t donate it to the church for that purpose. Another thing that has probably be stated, but the members of the church in California make up for a whopping 2% of the population, including children which obviously can’t vote. There are there are 10 million Catholics and 10 million Protestants in California. It would be silly to target any of these groups just because prop 8 didn’t go the way they wanted it to. What about their freedom of speech? Mormons are just easy targets for people who “think” they know what they believe. I would be equally upset if Mr. Hanks would have called the 70% of African American voters (that voted for Prop-8) “un-American”.
Now that the ‘Big Love Temple Ceremony’ has turned to yesterday’s ham. We can openly and honestly talk about Tom Hanks. You see, Tommy is throwing a hissy fit at this very moment. Tommy’s plan was to get the church in a big uproar and turn the whole thing into a big firestorm of revenge.
Revenge for California’s Proposition 8 of course. There is no doubt in my mind that after the Gay-Marriage initiative crashed and burned in California, Tommy decided to stab the Mormon Church right in the heart. He tried. He tried and he failed. The Church leadership handled his attack 10 times better than he and the rest of Hollywood handled the democratically decided Proposition 8 election. As always, good job Salt Lake City!
And me, well I didn’t handle it as well as Salt Lake City did, I have only one Tom Hanks DVD in my Library; Saving Private Ryan. That shall remain the only Tom Hanks movie in my DVD library.
