Even Tim Gunn thinks so.
Californians: You know your state is going to Obama. But GET YOUR ASSES TO THE POLLS anyway to VOTE NO ON PROP 8. I promise you the bigots will be there!!!! YOU NEED TO BE THERE TOO!!! Shut this shit DOWN and make it clear that legislated hate will NOT be tolerated.
… Why did it look like he was… shaking?
I’ll be voting no. And I can’t stop looking at this video. I don’t know why I find him so hilarious. “Just vote NO!” Hahahaha
Yes Ma’am…
I’m gonna go RIGHT NOW and vote “NO” to Proposition Hate cus Beet typed some shit in capital letters.
lol… How bout voting “NO” to Proposition “Rape my ass at the Gas pumps” first and then worry about who gay people can and cannot divorce.
Silly blogger
I think its disgusting to see are proud to be ignorant and closed minded
Vote No On Prop 8
Last time I checked, I’m allowed to vote however I damn please, thanks very much.
I’m not in Calif anyway but it’s so fucking annoying having people constantly shoving their opinions down my throat, telling me that I *must* vote a certain way.
(and yes I’d be complaining equally if I had people commanding me to vote Yes, but I guess those voting Yes at least have the sense to keep it to themselves)
Either way, Beet, why’d you even mention Obama? He is NOT pro-gay marriage. Where’d people even get that idea in the first place?
V, shove aside your righteous indignation for a moment. Beet is saying to California voters, don’t think you can stay home just because Obama has a lock on California. She is saying it’s still important to go to the polls to vote on this important matter. And, yes, Beet thinks this proposition is mean-spirited, bigoted, and all around sucky (I completely agree with her).
Also, if you haven’t seen any “yes” on Prop 8 people shoving their opinions down other people’s throats, then maybe you’ve been living under a rock.
I don’t live in California, but I wonder why they have a Republican Governor if the state is ‘going’ for Obama.
Beet, may I borrow the crystal ball?? I want to see what my bonus will be thei
dang it, I hit submit before I finished my thought!!!! anyway, I want to see what my bonus will be this month.
And I don’t pay attn. to this Prop 8 thing since I’m not in that state, but what would it do, invalidate the gay marriages? I don’t understand why they would do that after they just made them legal.
Politics sucks sometimes…
ignorant people are annoying
v,
i totally understand what you mean about people voicing their opinion a little much, however, when you believe strongly about something, you want to be heard. and it ain’t just the people voting “no” on prop 8 that’s voicing their opinions. if you lived in california, you’d hear and see all the people voting “yes” on this. but since you don’t live here, you won’t see these people standing on all four corners of intersections distracting drivers with their large “vote yes on prop 8” signs, or the totally absurd commercials about schools “teaching” children about gay relationships. so no, hun, the “vote yes” people DO NOT keep it to themselves.
and where did you hear obama is not pro-gay marriage? i believe you’re mistaken with mccain who is against that, dear.
Tim Gunn has the loveliest soul of anyone on the planet. LOVE HIM!
@charolette I absolutly could be wrong, but I think Obama is for civil unions but not marriage
It’s fairy obvious that I live in California (hence my name), and being that I live in Orange County where the majority of the people that live within this County are very right-winged republicans…. I sadly see more YES on 8 than NO on 8. It saddens and angers me to no end because most of these people have children and will be imposing there prejudice views onto their offspring. I have seen kids on corners with YES on 8 signs and they 1: can’t even vote; 2: have no idea what the proposition is about; and 3: are being mislead by their narrow-minded parents…. SICK!!! Just like minorities have struggled for centuries for equality, as sad as it may be, gays will be doing the same. I sooo wish I had the ability to vote multiple times to to ensure Proposition 8 does not get passed. Since this is obviously not possible, I have been education everyone I know. Beet, I can assure you that my fiance and I will be at the polling booths voting a firm NO ON 8!!
@Charlotte:
If you watched the debates, both Obama and McCain confirmed they were against gay marriage but where they differ is Obama is for civil unions and McCain is not.
I will not attempt to influence anyone to vote one way or another however, I do urge EVERYONE to educate yourselves on the individual nominees’ polices. The elections are only a couple weeks away. This may very well be one of the most important elections of our time……. PLEASE VOTE wisely as our futures depend on it.
@ OC Girl
It’s “fairy” obvious………………that was mean but funny.
It’s fairy obvious …..ya’ll should Vote for Prop 8 and have a nice gay.
this is horrible. why are people even debating this? everyone has the same rights, and gays should be no different. they aren’t hurting anyone by being a gay, and so what they want to do in their private life IS THEIR BUSINESS, not yours. So vote no to a biased, disrespectful piece of legislature.
No on Prop 8!
And if you live in San Diego … NO ON D!!!!
Thats the alcohol ban on the beach! NO NO NO
We want our beaches back… keep la jolla alcohol free, thats fine. We want PB and Mission BACK!!!
and @TSS
no one wants to listen to your complete disrespect. if you have something to say, say it with respect, and don’t mock people.
@TSS:
thanks for pointing out my parapraxis (Freudian slip). LOL! That actually was funny, especially since I typed that unintentially. HA!
@ OC Girl and TSS
lol
@ lucky
Oh you don’t want to hear my opinion??? You don’t want it shoved down your throat like an Alkaida burrito? Well then people like you and Beet should stop telling me who or what the fuck to vote for! Believe it or not some people are actually smart enough to make themselves aware of important current events and educate themselves enough to cast an informed and decisive vote….WITHOUT being made feel guilty that if they go against the majority they are a “hate-monger”. Just because the majority agree on an ideal… it does not make that ideal right.
And if your peon ass is about to say, well then don’t come to this site and read her blog… then I’ll turn around and say don’t read my damn comment …you sorry sack of ignorant shit!
The ONLY damn people who should be voting NO to prop 8 or even trying to persuade my vote are those people who know what proposition 1 thru 7 are. If you don’t … hurry up and google it so your ambition no longer exceeds your fucking common sense.
Either way….”lucky” …. get off my fucking back… When I want your opinion I’ll ask Beet.
@ TSS
So what does 1-7 say, or is for?
Not trying to be rude btw, I just know if I Googled it, I wouldn’t really get it, enlighten me? please?
just because you might vote the other way, does not mean you hate. alll for civil unions only. and yes, i am in ca. and i am voting for obama as well. yes on 8. now comment hateful things. and oh, my brother is gay. my sister a lesbian. love them so much and they love me. vote yes on D in San Diego.
YES ON D.
@TSS:
The fact that you perceive that the “majority” is opposed to Prop 8 means that what I’m doing is working.
:)
as i recall, tim gunn also supported ‘prop 57’, also known as the ‘eddie murphy proposition’ that makes it legal to give a righteous blow job to a hefty transvestite prostitute that you were just giving a ride to, with the only consequences being that you’re forced to star in the world’s shittiest film, Norbert, or a similar comedy written for marginal black comedians that think they can be funny for more than 5 minutes on leno. since it’s passing, chris rock, bernie mac, bill cosby and arsenio hall have all benefitted from the passing of this very important prop.
Please vote NO on Prop 8. My wife and I were married in San Francisco on Sept 22. We haven’t even gotten our copy of our marriage license in the mail yet…it would be devastating to have this all taken away from us.
vote YES to prop 8. Nothing will change for ppl in domestic partnership. It is not the way that God and our founding fathers intended for our country to be. VOTE YES!!!!
i love tim gunn! want tim gunn to follow me around at work. i can see it now: i’m working on making 2 gazillion buttercream violets for some crazy bitch’s 5 tiered wedding cake and tim will pop up from behind the flour bins and say: “how’s quirky? hmmm….these flowers worry me. don’t bore nina! make it work!” instead i have a nasty french chef that yells at me and tell to work faster because time is money.
*sigh*
An interesting note I heard on the radio the other morning regarding Prop. 8: One factor to consider, according to polls, is that a great part of the black demographic does not support gay marriage and may vote yes on this initiative. While most elections have relatively low black turnout based on the total number of registered voters, it is expected to be much higher in this election with Obama running. Oh, the irony. It will be very interesting to see how much impact this will have in determining if this passes.
Also, while it’s so easy to group everybody together who is against Prop. 8 as a bunch of hate-mongering homophobics, I think this is an unfair accusation. For some, it’s not so much about hating or condemning homosexuals, but more about their personal belief regarding the purpose of marriage — that it should be exclusively reserved to only between a man and woman. This belief may be based upon their religious values, or it maybe just based on their own personal standards regarding what the family structure should be.
Frankly, as a California voter, I think I’m going to stay away from this one. I have some mixed feelings about it and I’m kind of put off by the way it’s become so politicized by both sides, so I’ll let my fellow Cali’s make the call. Whichever way it goes, I don’t see it having much impact upon a flaming heterosexual like myself.
Vote YES on vote 8 if you do everything an invisible magic being dictates.
I think you hit the nail on the head, loco. You are still heterosexual and your relationships haven’t suffered. I wish most people were as logical as you!
I think the issue is the religious aspect of “marriage”. A lot of religions do say that marriage is between a man and a woman. Government should not interfere with the church, and vice versa. I think it might make things easier to have two separate words for government and religious unions. Under law, every couple, gay or straight, should be listed as a civil union. And all couples would receive the same rights regardless of their sexual orientation. Then the churches can keep the word marriage, but it would carry no legal rights. Does that make sense? I don’t know if it could work, but it seems to me like a decent compromise.
Eyes- I think a lot of states are similar to California in that they’ll vote for one party at the national level, and another party at the state level. I think it’s good to see because it means people are paying attention to the specific politician and not just voting based on party allegiance.
Hey Jemms, how come you are against gay marriage? You’ve made it clear you are not homophobic and you support civil unions. So I’m just curious as to why you oppose gay marriage.
(This is not a leading question at all. I’m really just curious)
Dino –
Makes sense. I know in our county election here there are going to be a lot of shake ups – and there is one Congressional seat that I’d love to vote out, even if it was for an opposing Democrat!
I’m not a big beliver in gay marriage, for the simple reason that I was taught marriage is the man/woman thing, but for the life of me, I cannot see why there cannot be the same rights for gays, like the being on health insurance, getting the same beneifts, etc. It’s still ‘love’, I mean, I can’t imagine the person I love being in say, the ER, and not be allowed to go in because I’m not family, or not being able to make major medical decisions,, things like that. That’s not hurting anyone else if those rights are given. It would actually make things a little easier.
Is discrimination allowed? Nope
Is saying certain people can get married and others can’t discrimination? You betcha!
Stop hate now. This is 2008. Get fucking enlightened you conservative cavemen.
If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t get one.
NO ON PROP 8.
Oh, and @ TSS- I am fully aware of props 1-7. And obviously we all know about prop 8. But why are you disregarding 9-12?
Most people are talking about Prop 8 because it is the one we feel more passionate about.
And the Obama thing does make sense- California always goes democratic… we know our individual votes don’t matter much (FU electoral college)… but it is still so very important to still go and vote on the props!
It is a common fear that Dems will just get too lazy, thinking that all other Dems will vote for them, and that all the Repubs will come out to fight it… then who knows what will happen. I don’t think it would be enough to actually have McCain win our state… but regarding the props, more conservative voices may be heard.
That makes sense right?
Donkey, nasty speech and name-calling doesn’t help progress whatsoever.
I agree with you in the sense that I believe there exists an inequality, and certainly discrimination under the law for homosexuals. I want it fixed, too. But fighting hate with more hate is not effective. When this country is super divided, we can’t get shit done.
Come on guys…… Let’s keep this sophisticated. There is no reason to be nasty to one another.
I have no problem with gays and have a handful of gay friends I think the world of. Some of them are some of the best human beings I know.
But recognizing the union of marriage between a man and woman or a man and another man as the same thing???
When a significant portion of the population starts having moments like these, then I’ll be willing to reconsider:
“Mom! Dad!” ” I got something to tell you” “I think I’m straight”
There is nothing wrong with being gay….. Be proud of who you are, fall in love have a long lasting relationship. Have some kind of civil union to acknowledge your relationship and have a great life… I sincerely mean it… But keep marriage between a man and woman sacred.
i just mailed in my absentee ballot today and am looking forward to hitting the mute button everytime an ad pro or con for either prop 8 or 2 comes on the t.v. i’m tired of seeing tortured animals and listening to all of these arguments about marriage.
is it november 5th yet?
as an aside, my 6 year old daughter was watching t.v. with us today when an ad for 30 rock came on. when she saw tina fey she said “hey mommy, there’s that lady running for president.” i lmao ms. fey has totally stolen sarah palin’s identity..
ca propositions in a nutshell
prop 1 super highway tax because there’s just so much traffic between santa barbara and oakland
prop 2 stop torturing animals
prop 3 childrens’ hospital tax
prop 4 molested girls have to tell their parents before they get an abortion – btw, why aren’t we talking about this one with as much outrage as 8????
prop 5 set the druggies free
prop 6 if 5 doesn’t pass, we’ll need this bill to help overhaul the prisons
prop 7 energy bill that everyone from the sierra club to so cal edison seems to hate
prop 8 still not quite sure why anyone wants to get married. but then i already am so the sheen has worn off for me.
prop 9 would give crime victims constitutional rights
prop 10 rebates for people to buy alternative fuel vehicles because apparently saving money on gas isn’t enough of an incentive
prop 11 redistricting reform
prop 12 buy that veteran a farm
in oc we also have J that would limit public officials ability to alter their compensation/ benefits without voter approval.
oh and go dinosaurs! well said.
Jeff… if you want to keep marriage between a man and a woman sacred, don’t you think that we should outlaw divorces? Because…. well…. nothing says sacred as much as legally getting UNmarried.
marriage is a joke anyway. look at divorce rates. obviously, straight people aren’t that awesome at keeping it sacred.
I feel bad for your gay friends. It must be hard on them having a close friend who doesn’t think they should be equal in the eyes of America.
I apprecaite your comments whocares……. Your right, lots of straight people are not taking their vows too seriously anymore……..
Maybe you can help me… I’m being sincere here… Not trying to be a smart ass.
I can’t get past the concept that biology sets the path for how much of our world is suposed to work. I’ve also respected the fact that many gay people I know didn’t choose to be gay, they just are…. I don’t think you “pick”gay…..
For example: Go to Home Depot and go to the electrical section and see if you can find any eletrical extension cords for sale that have either two male ends or two female ends that you can purchase….
Well natually…. they don’t make them or sell them because they don’t work….. (Not trying to say gays don’t work…)
So should anything be sacred? Should there be a natual order to anything? Thinking about a different topic rationalizing equality for a minute…
For example:
Would that mean that parents and their children should be equal….. There are lots of parents that are awful and should not be parents. But would that mean we change the rules and officially make parents and children equal? (Please understand I’m not in any way trying to draw a comparison of parents and child to straight and gay people) I’m trying to illustrate a concpet of natual order and logistics
I’m not trying to prove you’re wrong in your thinking…. I’m trying to share with you my thinking whether it be right or wrong…. Help me understand how you see it…. You might introduce something to me I’ve never thought of before… Just because we don’t see things the same dosen’t mean we have to rip each other a new one…. I know you agree with that because your response to me was very good…
I’m open to understnading another perspective……
Thanks…
Hey Jeff- cheers to you for your post! What a nice way to have a discussion!
Some have already brought this up in other posts, but looking purely at biology, you can see that homosexuality exists in the animal kingdom. Also looking purely from a science standpoint, gay unions help with the issue of overpopulation. Maybe that’s why God made some folks gay?
“Children and parents” isn’t really an accurate analogy for me because the “inequality” between a parent and child exists because a child relies on a parent to survive. Biologically, children are still developing, and it’s a parent’s job to help the child grow. Gay adults are not still developing, and they do not require a heterosexual person to survive. It is a common hurtful line of some folks to suggest that gay folks just haven’t grown out of that phase yet. These are the people who believe you can be cured of your “gayness”. Those places are the scariest. And at some point you all should look at the actual scientific studies linking homophobia to closeted homosexuality. It’s crazy.
Also, the fact that someone once named the ends of cords “male” and “female” does not have anything to do with what is natural and what should dictate natural law. It’s just a name someone gave to a cord at one point. They could just as easily have called them the giver and the taker (That’s a little crass sounding, I know).
I just think what is thought of as natural is still a little unknown to us. If homosexuality occurs in the animal kingdom, doesn’t that make it natural? If it is not a choice doesn’t that make it natural? I cannot choose my eye color, skin color, or hair color either. And I certainly hope no one would take away my rights because of one of these things.
I guarantee your hetero relationships wont suffer a bit by laws making same sex relationships equal to yours. I have tons of gay friends in relationships, and so far I still feel pretty good about my own.
I’m confused as to what electrical cables have to do with gay marriage…
Dinosaurs,
I apprecate your comments….. All good thoughts… It’s so hard to have a robust dialog about this via text postings :) We should really meet at a Starbucks somewhere and discuss this over coffee…. :)
I’m in Kansas City…. Would be willing to meet you half way… :)
For those scratching their heads on the extension cord comment: I guess I was trying to point out that something as simple as a common extension cord employs the natural logic that nature appears to drive with the use of input and an output/male – female/ taker- giver etc….
I think I read once that scientists observed homosexual behavior between the common house fly…… So maybe it is more natural and part of nature than we may understand yet….
I hate the idea that someone would be considered less than because of their skin color or eye color etc………. or for that matter sexual preference….
Where the rubber meets the road for me is moments when one of my gay friends will decide he is comfortable enough to comment on how hot some guy was and talk about what he would like to do to him…
Too me that is in the same conflicting arena as if me and my brother were to sit around and talk about how hot our mom is and what we would like to do to her if we had the chance to get her alone….. yuck…….. That’s my Mother we are talking about….
Am I wrong……? I respect the fact that my gay friend likes guys but I can’t be a part of those kinds of conversations. At the same time I want him (my friend) to be who he is……….
I don’t know……..
I guess if I could leave some of you reading this post with one thing it woould be that for as many mean hateful homophobic people that are out there… There are also a lot of nice well meaning people that sincerely do care about there fellow man (no matter who they are) and want the best for eveyone…. Even if we don’t completely understand….
I just like the fact that have been able to put our ideas on the table and discuss them without attacking or defending a position.
Thank you guys for that.. This has been enlightening
Best wishes for now…
Jeff
If i vote yes to Prop 8 why does that make me wrong or a narrow-minded conservative? Please realize that everyone has different views and opinions so stfu :D
PROP 8 IS THE WORST PROP IN THE FREAKIN ENTIRE WORLD!!! I KNOW LOTS OF PPL WHO R GAY AND THERE NOT ANY DIFFERENT! BIG DEAL! IF CALIFORNIA ACCTAULLY VOTES YES AND ITS BAND ITS A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE STATE!!!
I’ve gone past the point of ‘outraged’ and ‘sad’ in this issue, now it’s gone into ‘Ashamed’, I’m so ashamed of the people who are hiding behind ‘Marriage is between a Man and a Woman’ and whatever other arguments that they have which have no real logic behind them, I just hope this attitude doesn’t spread like some kind of disease, or even get worse as these people have an even more blown ego, gay people kissing in public? That should only be between a man and a woman, ban that. etc etc. Sad day.
I think it is insensitive and foolish for people to conclude one is homophobic because they agree with marriage being resreved between a man and a woman. It is natural and the original purpose of such a sacre union regardless of the inability of some to stay married. There are plenty of thriving marriages, and just to focus on the divorce rates are just issues used to legitimize same sex marriages. Listen people have a right to fulfill their religious ideologies as they please, and no amount of disrespectful close minded insults or comments can change or convince someone to change how they worship. Remember people in Christanity and Islam alike believe these are rules made by God not themselves, so to attack the individuals are unfair since they are just sincerely focusing on pleasing their God. No one has a right to attack someones religion because their lifestyle isn’t reflected or celebrated hence therefore your right to pratice something else. But , maybe people shoulde be homophobic if their rights to disagree with your choices are going to be met with such hositility, anger, and an immense lack of mutal understanding and respect.
Whether the animal kingdom permits homosexual acts or not probably isn’t a good point of reference to use since we dont look to species to dictate the norms of human behavior, for we would all lack self control and act on grave impulses instead of the ability to reason and make sound decisions. Ironically it is our inabilty to exercise self restraint which creates an ovewhelming high resemblance to animals, and greatly contributes to the various plights in our society.
In addition, our nation celebrates freedom of speech and religion.
This means everyone is free to express ideas that are different from others, and that indidivual rights should be respected.
Therefore people have a right based on their religious beliefs to defend certain behaviors and ideas that directly oppose the tenants they uphold. America affords everyone their right to vote, so we can’t exclude religious groups from the electorate because their doctrine teaches against the act of homosexuality, but not against the right to be one. Religious sects voting against prop 8 aren’t voting against the right of homosexuals not to express their lifestyles, but voting for their right not to agree it. And according to the constitution this right is protected and should be respected. So herein the problem lies, how does legislantion continue to protect the rights of everyone even when there are religious differences that also must be considered according to our constiution. I believe the fight should begin in the courts with both sides willing to talk instead of personally bashing each other and threatning the rights of one for all.
Furthermore this country was established by Christians along with the constitution, so when did America become homophobic all of a sudden when one can safely conclude that homosexuality was obviously taught as forbidden behavior by the founding fathers as well. Yet these same homophobic men are responsible for securing many of the rights and benefits that we all currently enjoy and love. Are you mad at the founding fathers too, because without their contributions you would not be free to express your homosexuality, or be given a chance to fight for the opportunity to now marry. Lets be real just within the last couple of years has same sex marriage even been an issue, so are we now witnessing a homophobic epidemic when it is convinent for your cause. Granted there are many who are hate monagers, but there are equally as many individuals who are just expressing their right not to agree with your actions, but agree to your right to express yourself as you please as long as it doesn’t violate the precepts of their religion. For most their religion celebrates and honor a marriage between a man and woman, and unfortunately no amount of justification, fear tactics, insults, or anger can stop people from obeying what their God or religion says is right for them.
I believe one of your adverts caused my browser to resize, you might want to put that on your blacklist.
Hi i am so happy I discovered your weblog, I really discovered you by mistake, while I was looking Yahoo for some thing else, At Any Charge I am here now and would just like to say thank you for a fantastic weblog posting and a all spherical intriguing blog (I also really like the theme/design), I do not have time to study it all at the appropriate now but I’ve bookmarked it and nice information, this seriously helpful for me. There’s absolutely nothing to argue about.
