Every few years a sweater Kurt Cobain wore once is sold to a new owner for a few hundred thousand dollars. So I can only imagine what the guitar he used in the smash hit video “Smells Like Teen Spirit” will fetch.
The blue left-handed 1969 Fender Mustang should be considered one of the iconic items of the Grunge movement since Kurt was the genre’s reluctant king.
Martin Nolan, the executive director of Julien’s Auctions, spoke to Reuters.
“This is one of the most iconic guitars ever to come to the auction block; this is the blue Mustang Fender guitar, one of Kurt Cobain’s favorite guitars of all time,” Nolan said.
“The guitar comes with its original case and, also, the guitar strap, so that’s … really important to collectors when they come to the auction to know the originality,” Nolan added.
Estimates are around $800k.
In addition to the guitar there will be several other Cobain items, like his 1965 Dodge Dart, a drawing he made of Michael Jackson and his skateboard.
