If you’ve been watching Michael Phelps swim at the Rio Olympics, you may have wondered why he’s got golf ball-size spots on his upper back and shoulders. The reason is a new, and somewhat controversial, new healing processes called “cupping”. The patient gets suction cups strategically placed on sore muscles, in an effort to draw blood to the surface. Theory being the blood will help speed up the healing process.
