Let’s be honest with each other – Gwyneth Paltrow was 100% serious when she used the phrase “conscious uncoupling” to describe her split from husband Chris Martin last year. That was her artisan, hand-made spin on what the rest of us just call “divorce”, but because she’s so disconnected from the rest of humanity and can’t speak like a normal person. Since everyone made such a big to do about her coinage, she’s desperately decided not to let it go and instead, to promote a book with the title that some psychologist made, which is apparently where she pulled the term from.
From Goop:
Have you ever heard the phrase “Conscious Uncoupling”? We definitely broke the internet when GP referenced this specific, gentler way to break up back in 2014.Originally coined and taught by the brilliant marriage and family therapist Katherine Woodward Thomas, the concept of Conscious Uncoupling had quietly inspired and influenced a community of counselors—until, of course, we accidentally blew it up. After the initial WTF?!?, there was a lot of interest in what it actually means, and as GP, her ex, and their children have continued to stay very much a family in spite of the split, there has been a lot of interest in how to actually do it. Last week, Woodward Thomas released Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps to Living Happily Even After, a manual that outlines and delves into ways a relationship can be completed and used as an opportunity for true healing and empowerment. It’s a must read for the modern breakup.
Yikes. As if Gwyn couldn’t get any tackier, she’s now trying to market the very thing that made her tacky/laughable to begin with (because I’m assuming she’s getting some cut of the sales). And yet… she seems completely unaware, yet again. At the same time, she’s also trying to say, “See, guys, I’m totally cool! I didn’t just make ‘conscious uncoupling up, it’s really a thing!'” What planet does she live on?
The other question is, why now? This was a thing over a year ago, so why not say straight off the bat that it was from a book?
Lord that’s retarded.
