It was only a matter of time before a Lucille Ball biopic was made. In fact, I’m kind of shocked it wasn’t made a decade ago, but better late than never. Aaron Sorkin has penned the script for the movie, which has actually been approved by Ball’s family, and her kids Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. will be on board to produce. All that was left was casting the role of the lady herself… and Cate Blanchett got the role.
From The Wrap:
The film will chronicle Ball’s 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, with whom she starred on the classic TV sitcom “I Love Lucy.” Ball had two children with Arnaz before they divorced in 1960. She married Gary Morton the following year.
A representative for Blanchett declined to comment, while a representative for Sorkin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Uh, what the hell, Blanchett’s PR? Why wouldn’t you comment on this? It’s huge, and you would think Cate would be thrilled with scooping such a high profile role. I’m actually not quite sure how I feel about the casting – I love Cate as an actress and think she’s beautiful and classy, but I don’t know really if I can envision her truly embodying Ball’s vivacious spirit. I don’t know who I would cast instead, and I’m certainly not entirely against this idea, but I’m just not 100% certain.
What do you think? Can Cate pull off Lucille Ball?
This will pretty much be a sanitized fictional version of her life, no doubt depicting her as a saint. Given that, Cate isn’t the actress to try this role. But I’ve got no one.
emma stone. she’s just too young.
