In today’s “big fuckin’ whoop” news of the day, Rosario Dawson apparently found it important to let Cosmopolitan for Latinas know that she was a late bloomer in the romance department and didn’t actually have sex until she was 20, because I guess that’s a big deal these days when kids are screwing each other before they know what sex actually is.
What were your teenage years like?
I was an awkward teenager. I went stag to my prom. I was dating one guy in elementary school who made me hold hands at recess, and then he broke up with me to go with a girl who would make out. I found out about it at school and for some reason the school bully wanted to beat me up for that.Really? Because you were, like, the symbol of sexiness when you first hit the movie scene in the ’90s.
I was a virgin until I was 20 years old! My mother was raising five kids on her own, I wasn’t just going to sit back and be a horny teenager and continue some cycle of teenage pregnancy — I wanted more opportunities; I wanted to be the first person in my family to go to college.
I think it’s totally commendable that she wanted to break the chain of teenage pregnancy in her family and accomplish things, for sure. I just feel like we should be encouraging more girls to do that, or educating kids a bit better so that this is the norm, not the exception.
Also, it seems that “awkward teenager” phase didn’t last long. She looks fantastic!
I definitely don’t think it qualifies as “big fuckin’ whoop” when we have people like Miley Cyrus heading up the roster of teen influences.
