Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda in the Sex and the City television show and subsequent 3 movies, has a new outlook on the first Sex and the City film, and it’s not very positive. Though she is still “‘proud of what [the show] did for women'” she expressed disappointment over certain aspects of the film. Via ONTD:
I remember when we screened the first movie in London, when Mr. Big shows Carrie that closet he’s built for her and the entire audience clapped. I found that devastating. Maybe that’s a strong word, but I was disheartened. Because I thought: ‘Is this what these women in the audience think true love is? A man who has enough money to buy you a walk-in closet?
Yeah, I get what she’s saying, but…f-ck, that closet.
An article in The New Yorker had the same issue.
Mr. Big not only buys [Carrie] a penthouse apartment (“I got it”), he offers to customize the space for her shoes and other fetishes. “I can build you a better closet,” he says, as if that were a binding condition of their sexual harmony: if he builds it, she will come. The creepiest aspect of this sequence was the sound that rose from the audience as he displayed the finished closet: gasps, fluttering moans, and, beside me, two women applauding. The tactic here is basically pornographic—arouse the viewer with image upon image of what lies just beyond her reach…
Damn. I guess it’s harsh (but maybe true?) articles like these that pissed off Chris Noth.
Then how did she not find herself “disheartened” with the entire show? It was never Shakespeare. It was stupid fun.
But beyond that, it’s a bit ridiculous the way Sex and the City was totes cool right up until it wasn’t. I’m sure The New Yorker spent YEARS drooling over the show, then suddenly decided it was somehow passe and offensive.
Have you ever heard the young starlets like Lindsay Lohan mention that it was “Sex and the City” that changed their perception of sex? They realized that they could bang everyone and anyone they wanted after watching that show.
If they watched the Simpsons as children, they should be okay with lying.
They are good to go in our psychopathic society.
Mission accomplished with that “cool for a minute” show – that horrified me. It was kind of funny, but…..remember all the spin-offs….the gay ones? Ugh.
If watching the Simpsons made you think that lying was okay, then you are too stupid to be watching TV. The Simpsons is not a literal guidebook on how to live; it is a satirical look at America. I guess we shouldn’t let kids read Gulliver’s Travels either.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that I’ve never seen this stupid show. I feel like there’s a lot of humblebragging that goes on with anyone affiliated with this show and talk about how ‘important it was for women’. It just seemed like a bunch of horny, old, desperate women that could be appeased with a boy toy and some shoes.
roger that, roger aaaaall that! fuck. this. show. i can dig on the redhead ’cause her real life lovah is “rojo caliente”, but other than that, yeah, fuck ’em.
It destroys all sense of femininity, but you have to remember that this series is written by a couple of gay men, right? I mean, Carrie isn’t maternal, she keeps her shoes in the oven (because she can’t cook), and she is living like a princess with frocks, shoes and jewels while having sex like a man and writing about it. Even when Miranda had a baby with Steve on the show – it didn’t change Miranda’s life one bit.
These are not women. They’re gay men in female bodies.
Yeah… Such a shame she made all that money from the movies then eh? Maybe she’ll give some of it back as she found it “devastating?”
*Humongous eye-roll*
I want a Mr Big to build me a walk in closet so that I know it’s real.
