Beyoncé Labels Herself a “Modern Day Feminist”

beyonce

Beyoncé is many things: a singer, a model (?), a mother and yes, a feminist! Woo hoo! Or something. Although she was reluctant to give herself the title, Mrs. Carter discussed her views on all things ladyhood in the new issue of Vogue UK and admitted that she thinks a lot of shit needs to improve for women, but even she’s a bit apathetic when it comes to activism because who really wants to hear a woman raising hell about how unfair life is?

Take it away, Bey:

“I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman… I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.”

She also talked about how she “met herself” when she had Her Royal Highness Blue Ivy:

“I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been. It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do’. The purpose of my body became completely different.”

Cue the EB readers who think she never gave birth! Come on, do your worst, guys!

  • Said the imbecile who wrote a song about catering to her man’s every needs. Not a feminist, certainly not a modern one.

  • LOL “modern day feminist”? Does Beyonce even understand how she got to where she’s at? It obviously wasn’t her talent alone. She is objectified and objectifies herself, and that has brought her fame, money and success. She’s actually riding off the back of female objectification. Oh the irony.

  • yackity yack STFU! have we ever heard her talk about NOT herself? is that even possible?? definition of a blowhard, right here folks…

  • Feminist, her? The real feminists did all the hard work for her in days gone by so she could act the fool.

    • Gotta say I disagree with this. Women should be able to dress however they like without being viewed as just a sex object. Issue with Beyonce is, as leija says, she actually cashes in on her own objectification.

      • Correction: women should be able to dress however they want as long as they’re okay with being viewed as a sex object. You can’t expect a straight man not to be at least partially aroused if your half-naked.

      • Correction: women should be able to dress however they like as long as they’re okay with being viewed as a sex object.

    • since shitlords like you decide to fucking police what we put on our fucking bodies. get out.

  • I do totally believe she is a feminist. She has an all-female band, and her songs are for the most part about female empowerment. She dresses showing off her body, but that is not objectification. She is taking stride of her own sexuality, showing off when she wants to show off and covering up when she wants to cover up. If any of you knew what objectification really means, you wouldn’t say she is doing it. She sees herself as an ACTIVE AGENT of her own sexuality, she takes centre stage, and she behaves like a queen, with confidence (Why don’t you love me, for example). Being objectified is taking a passive stance, having things done AT you, becoming the passive objects of the male gaze. Beyoncé definitely doesn’t do that.

    • agree! “women should be able to dress however they like as long as they’re okay with being viewed as a sex object.” WRONG. Beyonce wears costumes to show off her body because she’s proud of it, showing off your body doesn’t mean you have to be comfortable with people viewing you as a sex object! Just because you are proud of your body and comfortable in your body and show it off, doesn’t mean when the catcalls come in you have to grin and bear it…”oh no, don’t dress how you like unless you want some guy to tell you how he would tap that ass!” Her ego is beyond insane but Beyonce presents an image of a strong beautiful woman who can support herself and I respect that – I’d say she’s a feminist
