Kind of cool news: the hit Broadway musical Rent will close its curtains on September 7, after twelve years on Broadway, but the final live performance will be taped and later broadcast to movie theaters across the country!
It’s a part of a new venture by Sony to bring non-movie content into the multiplexes. They’ll be doing something similar with Cirque du Soleil’s Delirium, as well.
Would you guys go to a movie theater to see a recording of a Broadway play?
I watched this play on Broadway and I am sorry to have spent my money with such crap.
The worst play I’ve ever been to, a total waste of money, a stupid plot, etc etc etc
I didn’t leave during intermission because I hoped something good would come in the second act, but no no no, it got even worse, if possible, which also turned it into a big waste of my time.
Would I go to the movie theather for another session of boring boring boring???
Oh hell yes I would!
I’m a HUGE RENT Head. HUGE. I have the movie poster in my room, thats how huge of a fan I am. And I’m fairly certain that this version, although not live for me, will be 100 times better than the shitty College student version I saw in Chicago where Mimi lost her damn voice.
The question is, would you go to a theatre to see a recording of a (key word) Broadway play.
No. Regardless of the play. I’d watch it on tv but not in a movie theatre.
I would see THIS show in theaters, but only because I’ve already seen it once in New York and own the 2005 movie. In other words, I’m also a HUGE Rent head lol.
Not sure if I’d see other recorded plays on the big screen, though.
MambaX are you sure you were in the right theatre? I have never heard anyone say they didn’t like Rent. I am not too sure about seeing it at the movies. Rent was spectacular on Broadway and poignant for the times.
Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. Broadway is way more expensive than a movie ticket.
Yes Janine
and I heard other people in the room commenting how very disappointed they were with the show
some of them just left before the second act began
If people will go to the theater to see a Miley Cyrus concert…they will most certainly turn up for a taped broadway show. I support it.
what does this say for broadway? dont you think it takes something away from the thrill of being able to see a real broadway play in NYC?
next we will see the decline of broadway brought on by the internet, just like the music industry.
Who are the people that went to the Miley Cyrus concert movie? Young girls. Totally different demographic. I’ve seen concert movies and they can be ok but I don’t think it would translate well to Broadway performances.
Everyone has aids aids aids aids aids aids.
Actually, I saw this in New York too.. and it was awful. I was really disappointed because I liked the movie with the original cast but it really sucked when i saw it.. i wouldn’t see the movie.
YES YES YES YES YES!!! I’m sooo excited!!!
@Junkets:
LOL.
I remember reading that a bunch of fans banded together to make this happen. They made a petition or something, I’m not sure if this is happening because of them, or whatever, but I think its nice for people who loved the movie and don’t have the means to make it to New York before the show closes. I think its wonderful, especially since I’m one of the people who couldn’t make it to see it.
no…two different experiences….meant to stay that way.
I liked rent.. and then it was ruined for me by people who obsess over it.
And this will just cause more annoying obsessions
Maybe nt the play, it would more depend on the play.
but anything Cirque du Soleil? Im on that shit like white on rice.
I have seen Rent in New York and in Boston. This is a great opportunity for those that can’t travel to experience the awesomeness of the play! If you love Rent, how could you NOT want to see it any way you can!!!! The music is contagious and the cast is fantastic! June
For anyone who can’t make it to NYC, I think this is an awesome way to showcase the actual play (and for any to follow). The differences between movie versions OF plays and a play are quite severe sometimes. For those that can’t afford to get to broadway to see them this is a great opportunity. I’ve seen it on broadway, in the traveling tour and the movie and there’s noticeable differences to all of them. Just the fact that a running broadway performance has a complete stage that it can modify to suit its needs makes a large difference between it and a traveling show – so even fans of the tour show can enjoy some new aspects. As far as it being specifically for RENT, I think it’s an awesome idea. It’s a great musical. The play is much more grim and sarcastic when compared to the upbeat musical movie. I’d definitely go see it.
I actually just got back from seeing it in theatres and it was phenomenal. I’m a huge RENThead. I got to see the stage version with a touring cast in Toronto last March and it was fantaaaaastic! (no, not just fantastic)
Those who are expecting the broadway version to be similar to the 2005 movie will be disappointed. the broadway version covers a lot more and develops the characters better. i only wish i could have seen it w/ the original cast on broadway. oh well,
