Today's Evil Beet Gossip

That Chick At Yale Outsmarted Perez Hilton

Aliza Shvartz, Pictures, Photos

I know, I know.

Weird, right?

Here at Evil Beet, we decided not to cover the story of Aliza Shvartz (Best. Name. Ever.), the Yale undergrad who claimed she impregnated herself and aborted the fetuses regularly as some form of bizarre art project.

We didn’t cover it because I figured the story went one of two ways:

1) It was all some retarded prank (an “herbal” abortion? Um, right …) or
2) This girl was getting a ton of press coverage for something I feel is morally reprehensible. You know, I’m all about a woman’s right to choose, but to intentionally get pregnant with the knowledge that you will, for sure, intentionally abort the fetus, is disgusting in so many ways, and then to use the fact that you did this to score free press? Disgusting, and I won’t have any part of it.

Fortunately, #1 was the correct answer.

The whole thing was a prank. Er, um, excuse me: the whole thing was “performance art.”

Yale University issued this statement tonight:

Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman’s body.

She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art.

Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.

So, um, yeah.

We didn’t fall for it. Or make a huge fuss about it.

That’s more than I can say for some other bloggers.

  • It’s only 8 in the morning, but the line ” Aliza Shvartz (Best. Name. Ever.)” really did make me LOL :OD

Next time I get asked my name, Billy Shvartz it is!

  • Glad that you clarified that. Now I can simply find her nasty to look at without also finding her reprehensible.

  • Ugh. What a waste of skin this girl is. And I went to a college where it was fairly typical of the Performance Art majors (I kid you not) to perform as their senior project a piece in which they either stood naked reading poetry about shit being smeared on them or crouched naked in a plexiglass box OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY so little sociology nerds like me would have a good hoot on their way to study FOR REAL.

  • Beet – you outclass perez any and every day! I am so relieved this was not real, I could not fathom someone doing that with such a blatant disregard for life. Thank God it’s not true.

  • The fact that Yale even allowed her to pull this prank is disturbing.
Just because you are an artist, it doesn’t give you carte blanche to be irresponsible or obnoxious.

  • But, she could be lying to save her ass as well. The whole thing is morally reprehensible but not a surprise. There have been documented cases of women who don’t believe in birth control, for whatever reason, who have been pregnant repeatedly and aborted. To me, same thing. Willingly risking forming a living creature with full knowledge that the living being will be callously destroyed because it’s an unwanted thing. For fuck’s sake, take precautions or don’t fuck. Yeah, that.

If she did this as “art”, she’s a moron. Let’s see how she handles the moral majority heat, the art community standing up for her rights, and the establishment trying to brush it all away.

    Damn, pissy much this morning?:-)

  • You’re absolutely right, PeGG.

FWIW, Aliza means “gay” in Hebrew….Shvartz means black in German/Yiddish…so her name means “Gay Black.” So it IS a pretty damn cool name.

  • Perez. Hilton. Is. A. Fucking. Douche.

    The End.

And the people that “follow” him….should all be lined up and executed.

    :D

  • Aliza says the story about this being fake is a lie. If that’s true, won’t you look stoopid… Maybe save the I-told-you-so’s until the dust settles?

  • You know, I’ve thought about the art movement and why art majors decide to do this.

I’m convinced they do this because art, at its source, is primal. It evokes emotion. Passion. Wonder.

However, these people lack any artistic expression or imagination.

So how do they get attention for their artistic projects? The lowest common denominators: childish sex, bodily fluids, and attacks on social mores (usually religion or patriotism).

It makes them no better than carnival barkers. “Come see the ape woman!”. No, that’d be cool and artistic if done with period signs, music, smells, and stuff. *sigh*

You know, it made me sad that I could design a better art project in my head in 30 seconds. Without being ashamed to show my parents or friends. Or look like a complete flake.

  • eh..don’t feel the need to talk about perez hilton.
just makes it seem even more like you want to be the next perez.
    you won’t be.

that said, the class level IS far higher on this site..

  • Turns out, beet was off the mark this time…

The administration was duped–or, rather, dishonest. Journalists have seen the video footage, and Shvartz’s advisers have been reprimanded by the school administration. They’re still trying to force a false confession out of Shvartz, though (http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/24579). So once again, artistic freedom is compromised by the fear and irrationality of authority. It’s a good thing that didn’t stop the civil rights movement…

  • Dad poisoned the minds of his children with his irresponsible television viewing choices.
    Among other things.
Dad is liked, so expect the intent was not there. However, I suspect the same cannot be said for his wife.
Case in point:::Neighbor’s driveway sidewalk chalk art consisted of a girl’s name, a smiley face, other innocent, child-like offerings.
In our driveway our kids drew body outlines, like those one would find at a murder scene.
And all his son spoke of was guns, hunting and killing.
The father’s irresponsibility was manifested in how the son spoke when he was younger. Just ask his former teachers.
