I grew up with Grease and it still has a solid place in my heart. But I also have several friends who wont let their kids watch it because of the belief the chauvinistic behavior of the characters isn’t the message they want to send.
So I was curious how a Grease series could work in the MeToo world.
The new series will be set in and around the world of Rydell High, the school which Danny and Sandy attended in the original movie. According to HBO Max, “Grease: Rydell High” reimagines the movie with some characters from the original, as well as a host of new ones. It will still take place in the 1950s, in a world that rocks with big musical numbers from the period combined with new original songs as well.
“‘Grease’ is an iconic pop-culture phenomenon that works for every generation, and I’m thrilled that our friends at Paramount were excited about the idea of opening up the show and putting it on a larger canvas for a weekly series,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of content at HBO Max.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
