Zoe Kravitz will play Catwoman in the next Batman installment written and directed by Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves. And that’s awesome. Especially considering she was told she was ‘too ethnic’ for it a few years ago.
The 30–year–old Big Little Lies star claimed in a 2015 Nylon interview that she was prevented from auditioning for the movie because she was too ‘urban.’ “In the last Batman movie [The Dark Knight Rises], they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t “going urban,”‘ she explained.
“It was like, “What does that have to do with anything?” I have to play the role like, “Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?”‘ lol, you tell em’ Zoe.
She never named names, but the frustration she felt was clear.
So there must be a lot of validation and vindication in snagging a role that isn’t just coveted, but at one time held out of reach.
Zoe will star opposite Robert Pattinson. Jonah Hill was most recently reported to have been talks to play The Riddler, while Jeffrey Wright was in negotiations to star as Commissioner Gordon.
