Last night was the Daytime Emmy’s (they don’t broadcast it) and the stand out moment of the night was surely when Alex Trebek took the stage to accept his 6th award for Outstanding Game Show Host.
Trebek, 78, announced in March he has Stage 4 advanced pancreatic cancer. He told the crowd he had been worried he might get a pity vote, but then remembered it didn’t work last year when he had brain surgery.
‘You think that would have elicited a certain amount of sympathy. But I didn’t win!’ he said, drawing roars from the audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California.
Instead, Trebek said, he realized that maybe he’d been worrying about the wrong thing and instead should emulate Oscar-winning actress Sally Field.
‘You guys like me, and you value my work. I tell you if that’s the case, I can live with that,’ said Trebek, whose voice was thick with emotion.
He sure hasn’t lost his sense of humor, which is evident from his press room antics.
