Natalie Portman is married to a French dude and lived in Paris for the longest time (i.e. apparently only two years, but I swear it was longer), but she’s just recently moved back to the US — to Los Angeles, in particular. While one would assume that the Parisian lifestyle is super glamorous and wonderful and much more high brow than LA superficiality, Natalie says that’s not the case at all. In fact, she finds Parisians far too judgmental (and not accommodating enough of her vegan lifestyle, to boot).
Here’s what she had to say in a new interview with The Guardian:
Hi Natalie. You’ve moved back to LA after two years in Paris. What’s it like to be back in the belly of the beast?
People in LA are just wild. French people are very judgemental, or in Paris at least, about how you are and how you look. You would never wear workout clothes on the street or sandals or shorts or wild colours. It was fun to get back to where everyone’s just being free.
Did you move back because of the vegan cuisine?
[Laughs] Took the words out of my mouth. Actually, Paris has improved a lot for vegans in the past few years. It was a lucky moment to be there as a vegan.
I have to admit, it’s somewhat hilarious to see LA described as “being free” considering it’s basically the most superficial city on the planet where looks seriously matter. That’s not to say LA isn’t a lot MORE than Hollywood and that there aren’t normal people there like anywhere else, just that particularly for an actress in the business, that’s nuts. Go figure. I do have a soft spot for Natalie, though. Back in the day (and I’m literally talking a decade ago here), I let her cut in ln
I do have a soft spot for Natalie, though. Back in the day (and I’m literally talking a decade ago here), I let her cut in line when I worked at Whole Foods and she was super sweet. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a big fan, but she seems pretty likable.
