Lady Gaga has always been an outspoken supporter and activist for the LGBTQ community, and that community makes up a large part of her fanbase. It’s a rather symbiotic relationship, and I have to say, one that’s pretty amazing given how mainstream Gaga is and how much homophobia still exists in the world.
In any case, I digress. Gaga’s speech at the vigil held for the victims of the Orlando shooting yesterday at LA City Hall was incredibly moving. I don’t think there is any decent human being on this planet that hasn’t been incredibly heartbroken and just deflated at this heinous tragedy, but members of the LGBTQ community (myself included) have obviously had a personal stake and have been even more devastated (and no, it’s not a competition, obviously).
Here’s Gaga’s speech below. Warning: you may need to have some tissues handy.
Such a senseless, terrible act, fueled by hate. It shouldn’t be this way – no one deserves to be killed for simply being who they are, for enjoying and celebrating life and love. I’m not native enough to believe that love alone is the answer to counteract all this, but it’s a good place to start.
RIP to the many victims.
