I was a big fan of Sex and the City when it was on the air, despite the fact that I was still in high school and really knew nothing about sex OR the city. Still, my best friend and I watched with dedication every week and even made a cake for the finale, which we ate… by ourselves in front of the TV. And yes, I’ll admit it — I was rooting for Carrie to end up with Big. I found Aidan boring and too soft (though obviously now I know better) and just thought Big, with all his unavailability and bad attitude and shitty way he treated women, was the better option. Crazy, right? Well, it is crazy, especially if you talk to Darren Star, the creator of the hit HBO show. He thinks Carrie and Big should never have ended up together.
In an interview with Kindle Singles, he said: “I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don’t ultimately find happiness from marriage. Not that they can’t. But the show initially was going off script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That’s what had made women so attached.”
“For me, in a way – I didn’t [write] those last episodes. At a certain point, you’ve got to let them follow their vision. At the end, it became a conventional romantic comedy. But unless you’re there to write every episode, you’re not going to get the ending you want.”
Damn, that’s a shame… but kinda true. I don’t necessarily think he means the TV series so much as the movies, the second of which seemed so terrible that I couldn’t even watch it. The first I saw in theaters, and while I was still young enough to think that it was great that Carrie and Big got together, hindsight is definitely 20/20 and it was a huge mess.
What do you think?
