Zooey Deschanel, America’s favourite manic pixie dream girl, is no longer a child. She’s a grown ass woman – 35 years old, to be exact – who’s engaged and about to have a baby. Yet people still keep calling her “adorkable”, and she’s not happy about it. While it may be true of Jess, her New Girl character, she just can’t relate to the term.
From The Huffington Post:
“I don’t always identify, perhaps, with the way that I’m portrayed in certain public contexts. I try to stay away from that sort of thing,” she explained, adding that the word “adorkable” was a successful “New Girl” marketing campaign. “That was something that was calculated, you know what I mean? That was our marketing department at Fox and they did a really good job with our first season, but that’s a word that describes the character that I play, not me. I don’t personally have identification with that word myself.”
“In addition, I don’t really care what people think of me,” she continued. “I know that sounds crazy because you’re supposed to care about what people think of you, I guess, as an actor, but I really don’t. Obviously I’m grateful for all of the opportunities that I’ve had thus far, including ‘New Girl,’ but I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who knows me use that word to describe me, so it’s not of any consequence to me.”
Methinks the lady doth protest too much, to be honest. People who have to state that they don’t care what anyone thinks of them – particularly when no one even asked about that – more than likely does. That’s not hating on her – New Girl was pretty good for the first couple of seasons, though I find this season a bit painful. But like… who makes such a big deal over the word “adorkable”? She needs to embrace that manic pixie dreamgirl shit, because it’s the reason she has a career. She plays the part well. She’s created her own niche. And if she’s trying to act like she’s not twee as shit in real life, I hate to break it to the universe, but uh… SHE IS. Has she ever listened to her own records? It’s not an insult, so she should stop taking it like one.
Bitch sounds like a better description of her to me.
