You’ve probably heard by now that America’s most disconnected broad in history (and self-described “common woman”) Gwyneth Paltrow is taking part in the $29 food stamp challenge. Basically, the SNAP program, which provides government assistance for low income families to buy food, thinks $29 is enough to feed a family of 3 for an entire week. It’s absolute bullshit and we all know it – even buying stuff that is processed to high heavens and will ultimately kill your kids won’t get you through an entire week, so fuck that.
Anyway, Gwyneth wanted to draw attention to this very important cause by trying to feed herself and her two children on just $29. To start, she decided to go grocery shopping for the week, and here’s what she bought:

We won’t even get into how ridiculously stupid her shopping choices were, because of course Gwyneth thought 7 limes were in order when she only has $29 for a week. Never mind that there’s zero protein outside the eggs (and with 12 eggs between 3 people, that’s 4 eggs for an entire week, or less than one a day, so). But if this seems completely unrealistic, don’t worry – Gwyneth knows it is too, so she decided to ditch the experiment a few days in to go out to an expensive dinner with her new boyfriend Brad Falchuk.
From People:
The actress, 42, and the Glee co-creator, 44, dined at the L.A. restaurant Animal, which featured a barbecue-themed menu on Tuesday of pig ears, veal tongue and fried rabbit legs.
“They were sitting together, very cozy and romantic,” says the observer at the eatery. “He was totally rapt by everything she was saying. They were totally on a date.”
Well, if anyone is shocked at this news, I’ve got some more news for you: the earth is round and the sky is blue. Welcome to the land of “DUH!”
But hey, you can’t blame her. I’m sure poor people get sick of not having enough food all the time, so they just head out to a pricy restaurant for a $30-a-head dinner!
You don’t think beans have protein….?
The SNAP program is supposed to supplement, not provide entirely for the economically disadvantaged, so let’s just put that out there. It’s not meant to cover the entire costs. I’m not saying the system isn’t flawed, or the lack of quality food in inner cities or anything like that, I just wanted to clarify that it’s not intended to cover the total costs of anything.
That being said, is anyone really surprised Gwyneth did this? She’s such a hoity toity hypocrite and totally insufferable. Of course she’d buy a fucking avocado if she were on a fixed budget…she doesn’t know any better because she’s so far up her own ass, she doesn’t know what ‘the poors’ actually eat.
That being said, if I had a limited budget, I’d buy a lot of dried beans and legumes to supplement protein and look for fruits/veg that were on sale. Brown rice and pasta would be common and I’d cut out any extravagances (except coffee). Meat would be scarce unfortunately and I’d have to get pretty crafty trying to grow my own herbs and vegetables. Even on a fire escape, you can grow tomatoes. It aint easy being poor in this or any country really.
She probably had no clue what she was getting herself into and how stupid she made herself look bu even trying something out of her realm of familiarity . does she even shop on her own?
She actually addressed her SNAP plan in today’s GOOP email newsletter and admitted she couldn’t do it and that she messed up.
Yep! Got a story going up about that this morning :)
Um, peas and beans have protein. Avocado……and eggs. Read up on nutrition before writing about it.
I actually know quite a lot about nutrition, and I get that beans and peas have protein, but not enough for a family of 3 for an entire week. The average human needs 70g per day at least. They’d have to be eating a whole lot of beans, eggs and peas to get that amount, and then they’d run out of food in 2 days, so…
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you need about 70 grams of protein. The avg females needs far less than that-about 46 grams. And small children even less-19-34 grams.
i still don’t get why she had so many limes??? and can we discuss for a second, the menu…veal tongue, pig ears and rabbit legs??? WTF??? if that is how rich people eat i’m GLAD i’m poor!
