Eva Mendes is a new mom and has been opening up about her experiences regarding motherhood, and her relationship with Ryan Gosling, on Extra. During one of these little chats, Ms. Mendes made a (joking) comment about sweatpants that caused the Internet to lose its mind and go into a tizzy. What did she say? From Extra:
You can’t do sweatpants… ladies, number one cause of divorce in America, sweatpants, no!
I mean obviously she’s joking — it’s not particularly hilarious LOLZ — but it’s clearly not meant to be serious, right? Well, people managed to leave comments like,
Seriously? If a guy is going to divorce me cuz I wear sweatpants then I don’t need him in my life.
I’m married 42 years to the same wonderful man and yes I wear sweatpants.Let’s see how many years she stays married while NOT wearing sweatpants. I highly doubt it will be 42 years.
Etc, etc. (It should be noted that Mendes is not married.)
Mendes and Gosling decided to do some damage control, with Gosling tweeting,
Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That’s right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter.

Word to the wise. Don’t joke about sweatpants or North Korea. Real hot button issues. Trust me. — Ryan Gosling (@RyanGosling) March 20, 2015
And Mendes posted a photo on Instagram of sweatpants, with the caption,
Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you’re the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce. Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs.
Oh, brother! Yeah, her comment was kind of annoying and stupid, but anyone who seriously got offended by it needs to get a hobby, FOR REAL.
Sometimes…people just wanna get mad. And talk about their 42 year old marriages. Thank you internet, for taking the hit
