Oh man, I knew this was coming. Here’s the deal: Taylor Swift performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show last week, donning sparkly outfits and being Taylor Swift. I thought that was a weird choice, sure – after all, when you think of Victoria’s Secret models, Taylor isn’t generally the first person that pops to mind. However, neither is fucking Fall Out Boy, and no one was giving them shit.
Anyway, apparently a VS model named Jessica Hart dissed Taylor backstage, saying that she “didn’t fit” and people got up in arms about it, as they do, and now the company’s chief marketing director (LOL) Edward Razek has had to speak up and try to clear the air on Hart’s behalf.
From US Weekly:
On Nov. 13, Hart was asked by WWD at the fashion show’s after-party whether Swift could pull off being a Victoria’s Secret model. “God bless her heart. I think she’s great,” said Hart. “But I don’t know, to me, she didn’t fit.”
Today, Razek has come forward to clarify Hart’s comments. “I have personally been in contact with Jessica Hart and she said she was ‘wildly misinterpreted’ and that she thought Taylor was ‘amazing,'” Razek tells Us. “She is stunned that anyone would think differently. And that’s something we can all agree on.”
Razek continues, “I can tell you that everyone at Victoria’s Secret was blown away by Taylor’s performance. She could not be more beautiful or talented, that we felt extremely lucky to have her, and that she is welcome back to do the show anytime she wants.”
I mean, whatever. Taylor Swift isn’t a Victoria’s Secret girl, but I don’t think she was ever trying to be. If they wanted someone more “on brand”, they should’ve hired Christina Aguilera or someone. The selection was their choice, but I guess that doesn’t mean their models have to keep their mouths shut. Also, I totally love it that a Victoria’s Secret model felt like she was in a place to be condescending – “bless her heart”? That’s some patronising bullshit. She’s lucky Taylor’s fans aren’t like GaGa’s or she’d probably be receiving death threats now.
Victoria’s Secret / Razek know that they need to clear that up ASAP. Taylor Swift fans are exactly the same demographic that Victoria’s Secret markets their PINK collection. (I don’t know, I haven’t done any research, but PINK could be VS’s biggest division of income). You know VS specifically selected Swift to perform for reasons other than her semi-new album and her requested pay…. And VS is definitely not trying to lose tons of money from boycotting Swift fans over the loose words of some random model whom they could easily replace.
You may be right. And it would amuse the hell out of me if they convinced the teenage girls who buy VS’s shitty merch to boycott their stores.
