Damn, this is really sad news. I know we spend a lot of time making fun of celebs here and giving them a hard time – after all, we’re called Evil Beet and it is, of course, all in jest – but there’s no way to write this story up other than to be totally genuine. Glee actor Cory Monteith was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room yesterday at age 31 – incredibly shocking news to just about everyone, even myself.
I’ve never been a fan of the actor or the show, so I’m not sure why this one hit me as much as it did – perhaps because of our similar ages? Perhaps because it was just so out of left field. This is the type of thing you’d almost expect of Lindsay Lohan or someone equally as openly troubled (and I don’t mean that in a rude way), but Monteith himself had been in and out of treatment for substance abuse, most recently in March of this year. Who knows whether he was still abusing drugs, whether his death was a result of years worth of use and his heart just gave out or something else entirely. It’s just pretty sad, I think.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
The actor was found at noon Saturday on the hotel’s 21st floor, Vancouver police said in a news conference. He checked into the hotel July 6, and was expected to check out Saturday. When Monteith missed his checkout time at noon, hotel staff went to his room and discovered his body.
Police said Monteith was with other people Friday night. An examination of hotel video footage showed him returning to his room alone early Saturday morning. Police believe he was alone when he died. No cause of death was given and no foul play is suspected, police said. Police are questioning the people he was with Friday night. It was unclear if he was with any Glee castmates or his longtime girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Such a shame :( Glee released a statement via their Twitter page following the announcement:
We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person.

For more reactions from Cory’s co-stars, head behind the cut. Nothing yet from Lea Michele. Personal feelings about her aside, I can’t even imagine the state that girl must be in :(
I will always cherish you in my heart. Thank you for so many wonderful days. I love you CM … pic.twitter.com/HW5me8dmLo

Yeah, this one really got to me. It was the same with Heath Ledger. I had never particularly been a fan but there weren’t any ill feelings, either. But when I found out Heath died, I was deeply affected for a long time. I think it was just the randomness and the same age.
Oh, this is shocking. We knew he was in trouble, but you never imagine young people to actually die. He seemed so nice. Somehow, this is really affecting me. Wow.
This is tough. He seemed like a nice, talented young man who didn’t make a media spectacle of himself and took his health seriously enough to check into rehab. It’s tough to see him die so suddenly when others flaunt their lack of care and respect for their own health all over the public media stage on a daily basis.
Ya that’s it make it about LM she needs the attention
I don’t think this is about making it about Lea – but she was his partner, so this affects her and his family more than anyone else, so it’s a natural human instinct to feel sad for the people who will be most devastated by his death..
