From OTRC:
Hilary Duff, a former Disney Channel star who gave birth to her first child in March, says she is “pretty bummed” about a recent paparazzi photo that shows her holding a lit cigarette, adding that it was for a friend.
The picture was taken outside Rock & Reilly’s Irish Pub in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles on Friday and posted on websites of outlets such as the UK newspaper The Daily Mail. Duff’s son, Luca, was not with her.
“Yikes me holding a cigarette for my friend might have been a bad idea!” she said on her Twitter page on Monday. “Pretty bummed about the photo.. Sorry guys, looks worst than it is!”
Online responses to the photo have been mixed, while an MTV article titled “Please Don’t Smoke, Hilary Duff!” stated: “PLEASE STOP HILARY!! We love you and all, but you just created your amazing, perfect, and adorable family. There’s really no need to add cigarettes into the equation.”
First of all, Hilary, stop. Just stop. I mean, who the hell “holds” cigarettes for friends? That’s lame. That’s as lame as that one guy I dated telling me that the telephone number on a slip of paper in his jeans pocket was from a girl for his cousin after he’d left a bar. Lame, lame, lame. Second, no one who doesn’t smoke holds a cigarette like they smoke. You look like a practiced veteran, girl. Let’s not try to pretend this is something that it’s clearly not.
Last? Hilary’s a grown-ass woman. While some people are totally anti-smoking, maybe she’s not one of them. Maybe it’s her business if she wants to light up a Marlboro Light every now and again when she’s away from the house and out on the scene. Maybe people shouldn’t be so quick to beg her to quit, since it’s really none of their business anyway.
Good grief she’s an adult, she knows what dangers are associated with smoking. People are so fucking nosy, and I can’t believe I’m saying this on a gossip website but quite frankly.
I’ve held a cigarette for a friend many times. At the bar, if they need to run back inside to grab something, if they are taking off/putting on a coat, etc. It happens.
Yeah, but you’d think that someone who is constantly in the public eye and has paparazzi following her around would be more careful than that, since she knows people might get the wrong idea if they see her holding a cigarette. On the other hand, if she was actually trying to enjoy the cigarette she might not have been so careful, since she would actually have been getting something out of it.
I think its ridiculous to say because she’s famous she shouldn’t be allowed to hold her friends cigarette if that really happened. She probably didn’t even think of it, because while many celebrities are mindful they are in the public eye they do sometimes lose themselves and get distracted by their you know, life. If she was enjoying it for herself or holding it for a friend who really cares shes a big girl.
Good point – she may have just been distracted. But I never said she *shouldn’t* be allowed to hold her friend’s cigarette. But to judge from her response, it’s clear that she’s concerned about her public image, and I’m just saying that if I were a celebrity who was concerned about my public image and was constantly being followed around by paparazzi, I *wouldn’t* hold a friend’s cigarette. If I wanted to smoke a damn cigarette, I would do so and I would admit it. But if I didn’t want to smoke a cigarette, I’d make damn well sure I didn’t get caught with one.
As an ex-smoker and a mom of a 2 month old myself, I can somehow understand both sides of this, er, news. It’s wrong to smoke while breastfeeding, but it’s also a perfectly legitimate choice to have a cigarette once in awhile when out and about (and pump and dump afterwards), regardless of being a public figure or just an ordinary gal. I prefer not to, but if I did, I would have owned to it.
I don’t think she looks natural holding this cigarette; I wouldn’t be surprised if she was holding it for someone else. Either way, who cares?
oh give me a fuckin’ BREAK
shmoke ’em if ya got ’em! :D
