From People:
New mom Hilary Duff is splitting the parentingwith Mike Comrie, but there’s one aspect of tending to their son Luca Cruz that she has to handle herself.
“He’s really hands-on during the day,” the actress and singer, 24, who is the new spokesperson for Johnson’s Baby Cares initiative, tells PEOPLE of her husband.
“But at night, I’m the only one that can feed the baby. I wasn’t going to make him suffer just because I was having to get up.”
Though she leaves pumped milk for Comrie and her mother, who watches the baby while she takes a Pilates or spin class, Duff enjoys the time she spends nursing her 4-week-old son.
“It’s such a wonderful bonding time,” says Duff. “Just to have your baby thrive and knowing that you’re doing that and you’re responsible — it’s such a rewarding feeling.”
That same sense of responsibility since she entered into the world of motherhood motivated Duff to partner with Johnson’s Baby Cares for their Save the Children campaign, which will assemble, donate and distribute 5,000 Johnson’s Baby Care Kits that will provide families with baby care essentials immediately, during and after disasters.
“I’m involved in many different charities, but just becoming a new mom and when I heard about Johnson’s doing this, I was really inspired,” she explains.
“It’s such a great thing to have these kits be prepared for these new moms [so they are able] to take care of their babies. That’s all that’s been on my mind. The second that you have your baby, you’re like, ‘Okay, I’m 100 percent responsible for this.’”
At this point in Luca’s life, Duff says the relatively monotonous daily routine is broken up by frequent milestones.
“The day is exciting if he makes a new face or he gets to take a real bath instead of a sponge bath,” she shares.
“You know what was a big milestone? The belly button falling off. That was a huge one. And then I wanted to keep it but my husband was like, ‘No, that’s gross, you can’t keep it!’ I’m like, ‘I’m totally keeping it,’ and I secretly kept it.”
Duff adds, laughing, “But now it’s not a secret anymore. It’s in a Ziploc bag in the back of my makeup drawer. Luca’s going to think I’m a freak!”
Aww, isn’t Hilary Duff just the cutest thing? Motherhood seems to really suit her, and it’s so sweet to see little Lizzie McGuire become a – wait, she has the baby’s belly button in a bag in her makeup drawer? Oh my God.
I don’t know, you guys. January Jones eats her baby’s placenta and Alicia Silverstone spits food into her baby’s mouth, so maybe Hilary saving that little umbilical cord stump isn’t so crazy. Maybe all moms have a special thing that they do that sounds horrifying to most non-parents out there, and I just won’t understand it until I have a child of my own.
On second thought, nah. I could have enough babies to fit inside the city limits of Jacksonville, and I still wouldn’t baby bird my kids or keep their discarded flesh with my mascara. I don’t think.
Why is everyone saying that January is EATING her placenta? She’s NOT EATING it. Having it ground up and placed in pills is completely different than eating it. You make it sound like she has it on a plate and she goes at it with a knife and fork. I personally don’t find her digesting it in pill form disgusting. We’re one of the only species that doesn’t eat the placenta after birth. There’s nothing gross about Hilary keeping the cord. I kept my son’s. And Alicia… That’s just nasty,
I can understand keeping your baby’s belly-button, but I wouldn’t do it. I would definitely keep my baby’s teeth. I was pretty upset when I realized that my parents had not kept mine. Who just throws those away?
The placenta-eating and the regurgitation are gross, and the latter is not really helpful and is super weird. If you want to soften up a slice of apple for your baby, that’s one thing. The other is just icky.
Placentophagy isn’t that weird. Most mammals do it, and there are a lot of benefits, honestly. I’m not saying it’s for everyone, but no one should be shamed for it.
Why stop at belly buttons and teeth? Why not start collecting eyelashes and nailclippings….imagine the wonderful new-age jewelry that could be made with it!!!
vomit
Where I come from (Greece) is not uncommon for the moms to keep the belly button and the baby’s first hair.
Meh…this doesn’t seem all that weird to me. I don’t know as if I’d do it, but it reminds me of keeping the baby’s lock of hair or something. Seems silly, but these women are crazy and overly-sensitive…let them do as they please.
Except the Alicia Silverstone thing. That shit’s just nasty and a fine way to spread germs.
My mom kept mine and my siblings belly buttons and a lock of hair fRom each of us. I think that’s normal. I know a lot of mothers that do it.
