“I’m not one of those actresses that maniacally prepare themselves for a role. On set, I do whatever I need to do, but day after the day. If I have to improvise, I improvise, if I have to learn my lines by heart, I do it. There are certain screenplays which are so beautiful, that they only need to be repeated as they are, without any changes. I live in the moment.”
– Kristen Stewart explains to Vogue Italia the intricacies of her acting style.
Now, I could be misinterpreting Kristen here, but it sounds to me like she just admitted that her “acting style” consists of not doing any work and sometimes learning her lines. And I don’t think that’s ok. I mean, I know that Kristen Stewart is a wildly popular actress (which, by the way, says nothing about her talent or, in this case, the lack thereof), but I got my B.A. in acting, and I know a whole lot of professional actors, and not a one of them would find that little tidbit acceptable*.
The moral of the story, Kristen, is that maybe you should consider taking a few acting classes. It’s too late for poor Bella Swan, but maybe some other deserving character could benefit from it.
*Professional theatre actors, you guys, I’m not trying to name drop or sound fancy.
I don’t really care for her acting (it makes me uncomfortable to watch her try to act), but holy cow she is gorgeous in that picture.
Enjoy oblivion when the Twilight movies are done Kristen.
She acting is less to desired, I think she should work on preparing more. The same emotion through out all the Twilight movies isn’t becoming. But I do have to say she is very beautiful when she takes off the constipated look on her face.
“Now, I could be misinterpreting Kristen here, but it sounds to me like she just admitted that her “acting style” consists of not doing any work and sometimes learning her lines.”
Yeah, that’s what it sounds like. She’s extremely popular, but to say that mostly to blame because of the Twilight fans loving whoever was put in that role would be an understatement.
I did like her in Adventureland though.
I have seen her in interviews and she can’t string two words together to make a coherent statement. She was lucky to be in the Twilight movies, but I think she is dumb as a rock.
Man, Twilight is a real blessing to her but I don’t know how she will do after Twilight series. I guess I will never get to see her act since I hate Twilight.
@Jess I totally agree! It makes me REALLY uncomfortable watching her try to act.. all squirmy and biting her lip and making weird jaw movements while stammering and sighing before every sentence… but I stared at that picture for like five minutes – wow!
She can learn her lines however she wants to. She is a bloody good actress and she has made it and no offence you haven’t so where can you make a justified criticism on how she learns her lines? Answer: You can’t.
I, for one, have worked with the National Youth Theatre, Oldham Theatre, done my LAMDA and got distinctions and I think she is brilliant! I can’t work out whether you are shit at recognising fantastic actors or you’re just jealous because you didn’t make it and find some sort of pleasure of criticising others who did…
“Making it” and being talented are two completely different things. I can make a justified criticism based on my education and my experience, and I wasn’t criticizing how she learns her lines, because obviously that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that sometimes she doesn’t bother to learn her lines at all, which I don’t think is a mark of a good actor. If you have worked with all these theatres, I find it absolutely ridiculous that you think it’s acceptable if an actor doesn’t bother to learn her lines.
I’ve also worked with a number of theatres, and I’ve attended several theatre conferences, and again, it’s my opinion that Kristen Stewart is a bad actor. I’ve spoken to people who have gotten their doctorates in various areas of theatre, I’ve spoken to people who have acted on Broadway, I’ve spoken to people who have done a lot of film work, and I’ve spoken to people who simply love to watch movies, and the overwhelming majority of people say that Kristen Stewart is a bad actress.
I’ve never wanted to “make it.” Again, if you have done all this work in theatre, it’s bizarre to me that you place such an emphasis on fame. I don’t do theatre because I want to be a Broadway star or transition to film, I do it because I love it, and there are so, so many theatre people who feel the same way.
I don’t find pleasure in criticizing people who are famous actors, I just find it upsetting that there are so many talented, hard working actors who don’t get jobs while people like Kristen Stewart, who, all talk of talent aside, don’t do the work. That’s my problem. That’s all.
I think it’s safe to agree to disagree!
I guess everyone has different views on actors and I believe her when she is on screen, period. What I don’t understand is why people keep saying she is bad!
Well if Kristen Stewart is such a bad actress then why the hell is she still getting work? Why is she going on to bigger and better things? THAT confuses me because obviously directors and casting agents are not just going to take on people who are shit actors! In saying that, there are directors who just take on big names. However, Catherine Hardwicke chose Kristen (who was a nobody really) based on her acting not her name.
I do admit I was a little harsh on my accusations but I have read so many comments on how bad an actor she is and then you get some idiots who say she is ugly as fuck and they want to kill her…right.
Kristen does most things differently to other people and I’m not judging her, I just don’t care as long as I believe what I see then I’m fine with what the hell she does.
You misunderstood me, I’m not saying she “made it” as in FAME, I mean as an actor she has made it. I do not care whatsoever for fame! In fact, only 75% of it is good where you can do a lot of things with it for example get involved with big charities.
What you meant by this paragraph I have no idea (apologies):
“I’ve never wanted to “make it.” Again, if you have done all this work in theatre, it’s bizarre to me that you place such an emphasis on fame. I don’t do theatre because I want to be a Broadway star or transition to film, I do it because I love it, and there are so, so many theatre people who feel the same way.”
It actually made me laugh, what sort of person would want to go into acting just for fame? I certainly couldn’t do that. I do acting because it’s my passion and I really have no idea why I even have to explain myself.
With Kristen learning SOME of her lines: I doubt she doesn’t learn the majority of the lines otherwise the director would obviously say something about that! But if she doesn’t need to learn some of her lines BY HEART then she doesn’t she just improvises along those lines as she knows the character so well. I think improvising to her feels a lot more natural instead of ‘I know what to say next’ she makes it up like what we would in real life. But if she feels like the script is “beautifully” written and she couldn’t say it any better then she will learn them off by heart.
There was nowhere in my previous comment that suggested that I think it is ‘okay’ to not learn her lines- it’s bloody not! Obviously she will change (not completely) the lines if she thinks she can get it across better as her character. I, and other actors hardly ever just stick to the script exactly and improvisation is something I’d like to try as it sounds fun!
I completely get her and I hope that that explanation helps you to maybe understand that she is quite an intelligent actor and doesn’t do “no work”.
So basing your opinion on her acting on just THAT comment is wrong. I know that some people don’t find her acting good but I’ve met loads of people who think she is so we have a bit of a difference in opinion there!
Kind Regards,
Well if Kristen Stewart is such a bad actor why is she still getting work. Guys she is going through this twilight era or so. And once it’s over you will see!
She keeps getting work because she gained popularity through the first Twilight film. I also agree with those who say she is a bad actress. Pay attention to her facial movements and tones in every film she has done. She always acts the same in all of them with the same monotone voice and same facial expressions. Excessive blinking, constantly biting her lips and most of all her boring look. Basically it looks as if she dosen’t want to be there. Watch her new film where she plays Snow white. You will see what I am talking about.
