“I am a white, middle-class Englishman, openly trespassing on the music and myth of the American south.” – Hugh Laurie
So, for me, there’s just ANOTHER reason to be completely, sappily enamored with Hugh Laurie, who is House on namesake show, House: he just formally launched himself a music career in the best fucking city of all time, New Orleans. Hugh, who’s apparently been infected by a love of the Crescent City, much as I have (no, really – I’m working on buying a vacay home down there, like, as we speak), appeared exclusively at a nightclub last night to debut his vocal and music-playing skills. Here, here’s a sampler:
OK, not only is it some of the best newer music I’ve heard in a long (even though the lyrics are questionable at best), but it’s totally my style. I come from the school of loving musicians like Robert Johnson, Tom Waits, and Etta James, and I can totally appreciate Hugh’s new digs.
About New Orleans, Laurie says:
‘In my imagination New Orleans just straight hummed with music, romance, joy, despair. Its rhythms got into my gawky English frame and, at times, made me so happy and sad, I just didn’t know what to do with myself. I love this music as authentically as I know how.’
Hugh’s debut CD, ‘Let Them Talk,’ will be available for purchase on May 9th. You can bet your asses that I’ll more than likely be all over that.
