Or, as I fondly remember him, the monk from 1996’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, a movie that, like, defined my teenage years. And I’m not going to lie – a little bit of brief sadness sort of took my breath away when I heard the news.
Though Postlethwaite has a long, long repertoire of acting in television, theater, and movies such as the aforementioned Romeo + Juliet, and which recently included The Town, Inception, and Clash of the Titans, he also appeared in other major roles in films such as The Usual Suspects, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and The Constant Gardener. Even Steven Spielberg once referred to the man as the ‘greatest actor in the world,’ and I mean, it doesn’t get much better than that. You don’t need to win any awards whatsoever if Spielberg’s touting your on-screen talents for directors and producers to hear ’round the world.
Postlethwaite passed away earlier this weekend at a hospital in England, where it was said that he battled a lengthy bout with cancer that, obviously, in the end, won.
May your family be blessed with fond memories of your presence, and may you rest in peace, Pete.
He was SO good and SO scary in the Town. RIP.
Aww no :( Rest in peace indeed.
