Even for the child of a celebrity, this is pretty low. Cameron Douglas’ lawyers went to bat for him in court today and told the judge that their client should be allowed bail because his persistent drug use? Not his fault. If you believe Cameron’s side of the story, anyway.
From ContactMusic:
Cameron Douglas was arrested last August (09) following a drugs raid on his room at the Hotel Gansevoort in New York City.
He was initially put under house arrest at his mother’s Manhattan address after pleading guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of heroin.
However, the 31 year old was thrown back behind bars after he allegedly asked girlfriend Kelly Sott to smuggle heroin to him in an electric toothbrush.
And during a request for bail on Thursday, the 31 year old’s defence lawyers claimed Douglas’ troubles stemmed from his “difficult upbringing” with his Oscar-winning father.
Defence attorney Dan Gitner said, “(Douglas’) serious heroin addiction (stems from) notoriety that is not due to any acts of his own but by dint of birth and a difficult upbringing.”
While fellow defence lawyer Nicholas DeFeis added, “He didn’t benefit from his celebrity. He was hurt by it in a variety of ways, including ways in this case.”
While I don’t think anyone would claim that being the child of a celebrity is totally easy, it’s definitely not so difficult that one’s bad behavior is excused. Think about the logic they’re trying to use. If a rapist whose father and mother were negligent drug abusers wanted to hit the town again after being arrested, would it be fair to let him go because he’s had a rough life? The reason why Cameron can’t get bail is because he’s proven himself to be untrustworthy over and over again. It’s gross that his lawyers would attempt to use this as some sort of justification for his crimes and it’s plain old pathetic if Cameron believes it to be true.
Well, that’s going to cause a rift in the parent-child relationship.
I’m guessing Christmas will be a little awkward.
I’d blame my dad for my difficult upbringing too, if I were rich and had everything I wanted in life from the time I was born. Instead of yachting on the French Riviera I was mowing lawns every weekend for spending money. Fuck these wealthy crybabies, every one of ’em.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck ’em all.
I’m surprised no one else brought this up… Yeah, I’m sure being a celebrity’s kid is tough, but I’m also sure the lives of all those kids caught with drugs in the streets weren’t so peachy either, but nobody gives a shit if you were born and raised poor. It’s only when you’re filthy rich and have all you could possibly want that emotional distress comes into play because your daddy didn’t hug you enough and therefore your drug problem should be excused. FUCK THEM INDEED!
I’d be more upset about the Spicoli face he passed down.
HAHAHAHAH!
Wow, I see the Boohoo Defense hasn’t gone out of style.
I’m guessing the difficult part has been not getting caught beating off while spying on his naked hot step mothers.
It’s not gross for the lawyers to try the defence. Their job is to be a zealous advocate for their client’s interests, and the kid didn’t leave them much to work with. It’s gross if the defence succeeds.
Sounds like a typical drug addict: blaming everyone else for their own problems. He needs to learn about choices, how he made bad ones, and take some personal responsibility.
So sad. Yes many addicts blame their parents or other situations. I’m sure his upbringing didn’t help his addiction, but he evidently learned to handle situations by taking drugs and drinking. Hard habit to break once you’ve found that they can block the pain. It must be hard knowing that you don’t have the talent to live up to your father or Grandfather’s fame. I never saw his acting, but I know Cameron tried his hand at that occupation. It’s hard living up to a legend. I’m sure his father had his troubles living up to Kirk’s reputation. He’s still fairly young and could straighten himself out before he ends up like his Uncle Eric – dead at 46.
Well, he’s 31 now and facing what, 10 – 20 years in jail? So, he has a chance to wind up like his Uncle Eric – get out of prison in 15 years, and, knowing how stupid he is, doing a BIG shot of heroin to celebrate his freedom and dropping dead at 46.
Sounds like his speed to me.
um yeah. I think the lawyer was just being a lawyer.
fucking, really?
I would guess that someone’s never heard of Step Four.
