There were a couple of surprises at the box office this weekend. Jim Carrey’s A Christmas Carol delivered on the low end of expectations, pulling in $31M. Michael Jackson’s This Is It is still pulling in big bucks even though “It” wasn’t the two-week limited engagement that it was originally hyped as.
The Men Who Stare at Goats premiered in third place, despite trailer commercials running every twenty minutes for the past two weeks. Precious — an Oprah Winfrey Production — also premiered this weekend and you’ll see that it’s nowhere on the list of top ten flicks. It only played in limited release, 18 theaters, and pulled in $1.8M. That is, like, huge — $100,000 in revenue per theater versus $8,418 per theater for this week’s number one movie. I had no idea that the Oprah followers were still so plentiful.
Lastly, the premiere of Cameron Diaz’s The Box tanked once everyone realized it wasn’t a badly named porn flick.
1. “A Christmas Carol,” $31 million.
2. “Michael Jackson’s This Is It,” $14 million.
3. “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” $13.3 million.
4. “The Fourth Kind,” $12.5 million.
5. “Paranormal Activity,” $8.6 million.
6. “The Box,” $7.9 million.
7. “Couples Retreat,” $6.4 million.

9. “Where the Wild Things Are,” $4.2 million.
10. “Astro Boy,” $2.6 million.
Any chance people went to see Precious because it was a good movie and not because Oprah told them too?
I thought the same thing. I’ve heard Precious is very good.
wendie is full of shit as usual. the movie has garnered incredible press because of the story and the peformances. a no name could have produced it and it would still have performed well.
that said, i am so sick of oprah.
I can’t believe anyone would pay money to see Jim Carey chew scenery, especially in A Christmas Carol.
I saw A Christmas Carol yesterday with hubby & kids and we loved it! It is DEF. a must see in 3d! The animation was really well done. Certain parts of it made you feel like you were really flying through the air! I love Jim Carrey. :)
Oprah signed on to Precious AFTER it had been made and she saw it at a film festival. She had nothing to do with the making of this film, only in the distribution of it.
and it’s good. Not as good as the book, Push, but GOOD.
The Box was the worst movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. I still can’t figure out why I didn’t leave early.
So many moments in the movie were so 6th Sense Wannabe-ish.
The “creepy” moments were lol funny (library scene).
I’m going to go eat a taco.
“Precious” has nothing to do with “Oprah’s followers.” Most people never know who has put money behind a film. The most ignorant and irrelevant comments are on this site. (Once again.)
I don’t know about The Box, but folks, lemme tell ya- “Couples Retreat” SUCKED! Every moment of the movie that was even slightly entertaining is in the trailer. Save your money. Really. I wouldn’t even watch this one on cable TV.
It wasn’t that bad. Not as good as “My Sister’s Keeper” or “Christmas Carol” but…….. average movie.. very meh.. not baddd.
The Men Who Stare at Goats was such a disappointment! The best parts of the movie was the shit they showed as promos.
I had to see astroboy for an animation field trip, I thought it was a pretty decent movie. I don’t know anything about the original cartoon, but if you like animated films it’s worth seeing. It’s got that cute family feel good thing going.
Cameron rides the white horse.
