Today's Evil Beet Gossip

PETA Hates Hairy-Kate and Trashley

Per usual, the PETA kids were on hand to protest the Olsen twins’ signing of their new book, Influence, in LA last night.

“The Olsen twins support an industry that forces animals to live in tiny wire cages their entire lives and electrocutes and kills them for vanity,” PETA rep Ashley Byrne said.

In addition to wearing fur and animal skins, says PETA, the twins also use both materials in their fashion line, The Row.

What do you guys think?

Do MK and Ash have a responsibility to go all vegan in their fashion line and in their personal style choices?

  • I don’t believe all fur is wrong, but the fur of today IS wrong. Once upon a time, during the iceage, people used the fur off the animal they killed to keep warm. All of it was used, and those animals were hunted, which means they roamed free.

The fur of today is purely a fashion statement. Fuck that, a class statement. The animals are farmed and kept in tiny cages. The animals are raised purely for their fur from what I know, but if anyone knows of where to get a great mink, fox or chinchilla steak- please let me know.

With the quality of faux that is available today, why can’t people opt for that instead? Or if you have to have that genuine mink ear muffler, why not use the whole animal, let it roam free and humanely put it down!?

  • No, it is not their responsibility to go vegan with their clothing line but I defenitly lose respect for them not choosing to do so. They could atleast attempt to do something useful with their celebrity status besides tell girls it’s okay to starve themselves and do drugs!

I also agree with dpizzle, there are soo many high quality faux furs today why not use them?

  • They are entitled to their preferences in clothing. Disappointment because they happen to like something? Might as well be disappointed in gay relationships because that is purely for pleasure as well. Oh wait, it’s not PC to say that. Get off my favorite blog hippies.

  • I dont get srn’s comment….

yeah I dont really car but like srg said, I have lost more respect for them. But its not like they are exactly good role models anyways…

  • I don’t think 7-year olds can handle that type of responsibility. Wait until they hit puberty.

Props to PETA for best sign. Sorry Woppie. You had me…briefly.

To seriously answer the question: No.

  • I think its disgusting that they use fur. When the fur is to be taken off the animal, they are skinned alive. Can you imagine how painful that would be? For example, a chinchilla coat is made of 40 chinchillas. 40 chinchillas for ONE coat? And imagine how many coats are on the production line. I’m not an activist and I don’t agree with a lot of things activists do, however I am for animal rights, and causing pain when it is not needed is WRONG. Anyone who thinks fur is a good thing is disgusting in my opinion – if you want to wear it, go faux.

  • chinchillas are fucking adorable.

I would like to strap the olsen twins down, a clockwork orange style- with their eyelids peeled back, and make them watch hours on end of the animal torture that is the fur industry. Then see how they react to being confined in a 3 x 4 ft cage for a week or two, fed carcass of the same species, and kick them in the head a few times over. Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, doesn’t it? That’s pretty much what we humans do to those defenseless creatures. Oh if the shoes were on the other feet…

  • They should WANT to change their line and choices to not use fur. But they shouldn’t be bullied and trashed for choosing not to.

  • why doesn’t PETA concentrate on getting anti-fur laws passed? as long as fur’s available some people will use it in their fashion lines.

  • I don’t have respect for people who wear or promote wearing fur, but I don’t have much respect for PETA’s tactics either. Their signs are pointlessly insulting–what does calling the twins “Trollsons” or “Fur hags from hell” really accomplish? It doesn’t educate anyone–it’s just hateful. They make themselves look like nutjobs with their stunts, while they should be spending their time trying to end animal suffering in a more meaningful, effective way.

  • The point of PETA’s tatics cj is that the industry in which they are fighting against is horrific. The stunts are designed to bring attention to the matter. Slaughterhouses/furriers/factory farms purposefully shield you from what goes on inside because if you saw the torture, abuse and hideous conditions those animals go through it might just change your mind about what you eat/wear/buy. The point isn’t about staying in the background fighting to change laws, they do that too, the point is to get in the public eye to be as harsh to abusers as they are to the animals.

Animals can feel, they are sentient beings. They deserve a life without fear, pain and suffering. Respect all life, not just humans.

  • I’m going to get sooo much crap for this ;-)

My daddy always said PETA stoo for People Eating Tasty Animals. I never understood why they hated fur coats so much, I figured waste not, want not

  • ok, killing animals to wear their pelts on your person to make a class statement is wrong. period. especially when there are quality cruelty-free alternatives. I am a vegetarian not a vegan but i don’t wear leather or fur. I do think it is the olsen twins’ obligation to create a vegan line. IMHO

  • to reply to CJ. PETA folks ARE nutjobs!!!! I don’t have feelings either way about fur really but folks that attack and smear others to try and get their point of view across are worthless. IMO

  • I don’t want to be on PETA’s side (have a tendency to go way too far and use bad taste) or people who wear fun (just why?) however, as people mentioned… it’s not like it’s illegal to own/ buy a fur. and A LOT of people eat meat, and PETA doesn’t freak out as much. I mean, I see the difference, but we are still talking dead, probably tortured animals.

also, i don’t see why PETA targets them so hardcore. i don’t think they have like tons of little fans looking up to them… they aren’t like miley or lindsey or something. I think the whole thing makes PETA look like a gossipy teenage girl, name-calling

And I totally don’t think people who own a fur are going to hell…. too far PETA. if you made calmer, more subtle arguments, you would easily win over people like me, who are more towards the middle of this debate

  • Oh get over it, PETA. They’re not hunting down people’s pets and skinning them for pelts. Those animals are raised purposely for their fur. They wouldn’t exist otherwise. Find another hobby besides harassing humans. Humans were still on the top of the food chain, last I checked.

  • Hells yeah PETA Hates them!
Animals arent there for us to skin (whilst still alive, in a lot of cases), and they definitley arent there for us to wear.
Its cruel, unnecessary and completely disgusting. Fake fur looks the same and doesnt mean you have the carcass of a dead mink or whatever slumped acrosss your shoulders.

Stop hating on PETA – They stand up for whats right. Yes, they sometimes take it a little too far, but if people stopped trashing them and starting listening, they wouldnt have to take it that far.
And just because those animals were raised for fur, does that make it right to kill them? Years ago, a baby born to a slave was then raised to be a slave, but you wouldnt consider that right.
Humans are mammals, and you know what mammals are? Animals. You wouldnt go around skinning humans and wearing them, so why do the same to defenceless animals?
    PETA all the way, baby.
I’ll argue this one to the end of the world.

  • leigh—animals don’t equal people though. ever. you can’t say, well an animal is like a slave- no, it’s not. slaves are people. there is a huge distinction between the two.

I don’t agree with animal abuse… and I don’t wear fur.. but seriously, maybe peta should really think of ways of actually helping shit. making fun of twin girls who are famous because they were on frigging full house isn’t doing anything.

also, like…. not THAT many people wear fur,….. but a TON of people eat meat. and a ton of people wear leather and other animal products. I mean, it’s not like these crazy Olsen twins are the only ones partaking in any activity that is harmful to animals. like Peta doesn’t go away throwing red paint on people wearing leather belts or something.. I don’t get it, really.

again, I think fur is icky and would never wear it, but I duno. I’m not going to hate two girls who wear fur while I eat meat and wear rainbows. I think it’s hypocritical.

  • Leather is a by product of the meat industry. Fur clothing is not. When was the last time you sat down to a meal of chinchilla or mink?

I respect people who are willing to take responsibility for the food on their table and the clothing on their backs. So unless you hunt sustainably and use all the animal YOU HAVE NO FUCKING RIGHT TO WEAR THEIR SKINS. We might be top of the food chain but we also have moral compass we might just want to start using instead of slagging off other people because their actions make you feel uncomfortable. The Olsons are role models for thousands of utterly impressionable pre teens and they are telling them that wearing fur is good. It’s not.

  • well… is chinchilla yummy? just kidding.

what about vegetarians who wear leather? is that not okay, because they are then only using animals as fashion and not for food?

just curious. I don’t really have a huge opinion either way. this is definitely a topic where I just like to learn more about other people’s opinion.

  • It isn’t our right, as humans, to use whatever the hell we feel like it for our own gain. There is no need to use animals in any way (IE: food, clothing, transportation) in this day and age. It is about compassion towards other living things.

Most of you don’t seem to understand or know what PETA is about. How about this…why don’t you actually visit their website http://www.peta.org and find out what they stand for and what they fight for. I am willing to bet its more than you knew about.

They promote being vegetarian/vegan, they do. You just don’t see it when they are campaigning for fur. There are a host of things that they do.

To say that animals are here for us to use because of the food chain is stupid. Just because you are able to kill doesn’t mean you should.

And, to say that there is no similarities between slaves and animals is wrong. Slaves and animals the last time I checked were animals. Living, breathing, able to feel happiness and sadness. Did you know that a mother cow or pig will pace the stall where they raised their young once the young is removed for slaughter. They often will fall into depression for the lost child. So like a human. Study the habits of animals and see the likeness to us.

The idea is compassion towards living things that can feel pain and suffering. Compassion should be a basic human quality.

  • Screw em….

There are organizations for animal rights, womens rights, black people, gay people, religous people, babies, etc….

But what about White ass Dudes… they get blamed for everything!

So please….. Support your local PETWaD!

  • Equating people and animals is wrong. PETA is full of nutjobs that will do anything to force their way of thinking on everyone else. I have been to the PETA website and they are without a doubt the most disgraceful organization out there. And those here who like PETA are doing the same thing PETA does, using anger, hatred and deceit to try to make everyone else feel like hell about our choices. Sorry, but if anyone should be ashamed it is the PETA people. And if you don’t like living in a free country, go live somewhere else where you can be dictators.

Mary Kate/Ashely are under absolutely no obligation to stop wearing fur or using animal products. I didn’t lose respect for them because I had none to begin with, just like I have no respect for PETA, who think it’s their right to pass moral judgement.

  • It’s one thing for the Olsens to wear fur. It’s quite another to create a line of clothing that utlizes fur, thus perpetuating the killing of more animals for their fur in order to make something with their name slapped all over it.

Do they have a definitive RESPONSIBILITY to design a clothes line that doesn’t call for animals to be killed? Well, no, but it would be nice if they had enough of a social conscience to do so. And it undermines the work done by groups trying to convince people not to wear fur when people deliberately incorporate them into new clothing lines.

Is PETA going about it the right way? Matter of opinion. They’re known for getting their point across in a rather aggressive and sometimes illegal way, but then again it gets them on television and blogs which is the publicity they’re looking for in order to further their cause.

Maybe when people die from natural causes we should make horse blankets and dog collars from their skin, huh? Like you said, waste not, want not…

  • Fuck PETA. If they were to protest things like any other nutjob activist group, I might not care. If making fur clothing isn’t illegal, the Olsens aren’t doing anything wrong. PETA on the other hand is pretty guilty of hate propaganda. Are these not the facts? If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Don’t take to the streets to make an ass of yourself while you can be doing something productive.

  • Are there any two annoying groups who deserve each other more? Can’t stand PETA, but I gotta love those masks. Classic stuff!

  • This is why I *adore* PETA. Go ahead and keep on fitting for animal rights! The use of animal fur, pelts ect. is babaric; I agree with dpizzle, this isn’t the Ice Age anymore, bitches!

  • My favorite kind of post is when a person passes moral judgment on other people for passing moral judgment. Right, Veronica?

I’m vegetarian and I don’t wear leather. It just skeeves me out to think of wearing an animal’s skin. Still, it’s legal and people are free to do what they want. But I would hope that, eventually, we could rise above torturing animals for the sake of fashion.

Of course, that’s not to say that PETA’s tactics are the way to go. They usually end up shooting themselves in the foot whenever they do anything.

    Still, “trollsons” is pretty funny.

  • wait, so are all of you that are against fur against leather as well? or you see that as different because other parts of the animal are also being used?

I duno, like I would never wear fur. I just think it’s gross… it doesn’t even look good, so I don’t really understand why people would. but again, I think peta always goes too far and gets too personal. it’s like like the olsen are actually the people making the furs? like, people have been wearing it wayyyy before they were even born.

maybe I just feel bad for those 2 because they had to grow up in the limelight, ever since they were babies… I think maybe I just don’t expect them to “act right”

I duno. But props to you guys were are really against it, and to all the veggies and vegans. I think it’s super cool that you are standing up for something you believe in!

  • i think the main point of peta’s protests is to get in the spotlight and to get people talking…i’d say mission accomplished.

  • well, honestly, their tactics just rub me the wrong way. I’m against wearing fur, but it actually makes me feel bad for people who DO WEAR FUR.

so I guess it just has the opposite effect on me.

  • I care a lot more about the people who are treated unfairly and the economy tanking and soldiers dying in the middle east than I will ever care about animals in cages. And I have pet chinchillas. And I used to volunteer at my local vet’s office. Seriously people. Protest something useful. When chickens can have leg room but gays can’t marry there is something wrong going on.

If PETA wants to get people on their side, they should give out information about the health benefits of free range, well treated animals (they taste way better). Calling people whores makes them look crazy and manipulative.

I will say that the reason we have chinchillas as pets in the US is mainly due to the fur industry. Thanks, guys!

  • LOL, I always thought that when PETA dirtied people’s furs, wasn’t it like wasting the fur? If you’re going to kill an animal and use its fur, and go through all that trouble, why would you want to ruin a job well done? and why dont we use the meat from the animals that are skinned to feed the people in africa? in that way, you’re supplying fur for fashion, and food for people :)

I think that PETA should chill, and stop fucking with people’s money. Yes they should fight to get anti-fur laws passed instead of ruining fuzzy things. Also, the bastards making the fur should treat the animals nicely, and at least kill them in a proper way (like gassing?) with out pain if they are still to make fur.

My grandfather used to hunt foxes and rabbits, and after he skinned them, he would eat the meat and make gloves and hats out of the fur and skins. He used everything on the animal, so whats wrong with doing that?

  • I kinda sorta like animals more than I do most people. I know I am not alone in that statement either. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not “damaged”. I have a healthy relationship with my dad. I just think animals, in many, many ways are better than most people. I voted no on 8. I voted to give chickens more leg room. Prop 8 thing really doesn’t have anything to do with this argument. AHEM, Asta. Anyway, Point it, many people don’t care about these animals (although they should), but Peta DOES and they want to use their wacky tactics to get the point across. I’d say mission accomplished, because here we are talking about it.
