We are SOOOOOO NOT DONE fighting this battle! We will KEEP FIGHTING until this is actually a country where EQUAL RIGHTS are granted to ALL PEOPLE. We will just keep at this shit until all the old hateful Bible-thumpers are dead and gone and we have a majority of people who understand that denying marriage to same-sex couples is discriminatory, bigoted and WRONG. Jesus preached TOLERANCE and LOVE and ACCEPTANCE, not HATE. I, for one, will be praying for all those whose hearts are burdened with such hatred for their fellow human beings. Carrying that burden around must be exhausting, and I hope you are all able, at some point, to set it down.
But for those of you who are California residents, the fight starts again, and it starts again TODAY.
You can sign this petition asking Governor Schwarzenegger to reopen Prop 8.
We ARE NOT GOING AWAY, people!!!
thanks for posting this!!!!! I have been telling all of my friends about this!!!!!
GO BEET!
Not everyone who voted yes on 8 is “hateful” or “intolerant”. I know many people that did who fully believe that gay partnerships deserve EQUAL RIGHTS under the law, HOWEVER, they also believe the word marriage and the idea of marriage entitles the relationship between a man and a woman. The word “marriage” does not even belong in the constitution if it makes the difference between equality for all, but just because some people feel that way doesn’t mean they’re intolerant, hateful, uneducated, religious bible thumpers, blah blah blah.
Gay partnerships deserve the same rights as man-woman, atheist, christian, hindu, e.t.c. partnerships do, many people believe that, but not everyone is ready to completely change the definition of marriage.
@wpolochick
I totally understand. I think black people deserve drinking fountains and schools, too. It’s not that I don’t think that black people shouldn’t have public sources of water and education, it’s just that I’m not quite ready to let them have the SAME drinking fountains and schools as white people. I’m not being intolerant or hateful, and I definitely think black people deserve the same rights as white people, it’s just that I’m not ready to completely let them drink from the same fountain as my white kids. That’s all.
@EvilBeet
You rock. <3
I’ve been pretty devastated by this all day. Really took the joy of Obama’s victory away.
I have hope, though. The LGBT community got the wake up call it needed and we may finally get our shit together.
AMEN, BEET. I wish I was a CA resident so I could sign this!!
I just can’t read ‘Governor Schwarzenegger’ without almost having a conniption.
I am not signing that petition. I do not support gay marriage. Plain and simple.
Um…hate the sin..not the person.
I’m pretty sure that some of these aren’t voting for Prop 8 out of sheer hatred.
No one cares jj… LOL
the burden becomes a little less the more people are there to support it. Even seeing a complete stranger’s reaction to the atrocity of the discrimination makes it a little lighter.
YOU PEOPLE HAVE ISSUES!! YOU SAY YOU WANT EQUAL RIGHTS BUT YOU DISCRIMINATE AGAINST THE PEOPLE THAT VALUE THE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE. YOU LOST, GET THE FUCK OVER IT. WE DON’T WANT TO GRANT YOU MARRIAGE AND WE WON! I DO NOT SUPPORT GAY MARRIAGE, PLAIN AND SIMPLE. WE WON ON PROP 22 AND WE NOW WON AGAIN FOR PROP 8 SO GET OVER YOUR LOST! ITS OVER!
EVIL BEET YOU ARE MY HERO<3
Wow..thanks Michelle for adding a bigoted comment to these.
I was shocked by how immature the petition sounded. They make it sound like Gov. Shwarzenegger was for the Proposition, when, in fact, he was against it. It just sounds like a bunch of people whining…not a professional statement.
Anyway, I’m all for reopening Prop 8!! Thanks for posting this beet!
Fuck…… Michelle, you would make a great gang member or 2yr old for that matter. Simmer down now, will ya?
Beet is the shizzles<3
WHY why why why do you (anyone pro- 8) care if a man and a man or a woman and a woman, two humans with nothing more than common love for each other, want to get married, want to have the same benefits and want to be recognized legally as a married couple? Why do you care so much? Your answers are always the same.. “marriage has always been between a man and a woman” and you want to preserve the sacred tradition. Are you really worried that it going to affect your lives? Such bullshit. It’s like you’re that nosey neighbor who needs to know everyone elses business and instead of focusing on your own life, you need to project your “values” onto others. Gross. On a more positive note, I really feel like this was a close call, so next time, and there will be a next time, things will change.
Funny how when Obama wins…every one is like, “The people have spoken, the right guy won, etc…”
Yet when California voters spoke and passed Prop 8…that’s not good enough.
Do you want a democratic society…or just want things your way? Make up your mind.
beet i love you so…..
I LOVED your retort too, about the drinking fountains….. you’re after my own heart. I would gay-marry you, but my state apparently just banned that. And I’m not gay :( crap
HEY CAMI—- I am happy Obama won. Of course I am. But I wouldn’t have thought poorly of people had McCain been voted in (not like I did when Bush was….. jeeeeebus). But civil rights should not be voted on. We should not be voting on whether or not we should all have the same rights.
You think, years ago, if the south took a vote, they would have outlawed slavery?
I am proud that my country has become tolerant enough to elect an African-American. Yet I am sad that my state has decided to TAKE AWAY rights from a group of people. TAKE AWAY.
oh and fuck off Michelle. AND STOP YELLING. I hope the fact that Obama got elected pisses you off.
“YOU PEOPLE HAVE ISSUES!! ITS OVER!”
How am I “discriminating” against people (most of which will end up divorced) that “value the definition of marriage”? I am not saying that THEIR rights to get married should be taken away.
And do not say “we don’t want to grant you marriage.” Who the fuck are you talking to bitch? I’m fucking straight. I could get married a million times, and divorced, if I felt like it.
Fuck you. I hope to God that you don’t actually live in California.
And it is not fucking over. It will not be over. You just wait.
Bitch.
@Cami
I, personally, have said no such thing. The American people were WRONG when they re-elected George W. Bush and Californians are WRONG about this. What if we’d done nothing when the Jim Crow laws were passed — laws that banned interracial marriage and segregated public facilities? What if we’d said “the public has spoken, oh well”? We certainly wouldn’t have a bi-racial president-elect, that’s for damn sure. Think of how absurd it seems today to deny a black man the right to marry a white woman. Denying gay couples the right to marry will seem equally absurd in twenty or thirty years.
I do want a democratic society, and I will continue to fight and speak out and make my case until we have a society with a majority of voters who understand how important it is that same-sex couples be allowed to marry.
man……. what do you think would have happened in 1850 had Americans taken a popular vote to see if women should be allowed to vote? God…. it’s just….. fucking people…… can’t you see anything…….
also, I don’t think gay people are DEMANDING to be wed in churches. So your little churches can ban gay marriages all they want. Nobody fucking cares. Keep your churchy shit out of my government.
<3 you beet
I love you for this. Thank you.
I’ve said it before, I will say it again. You do NOT put civil rights up to a vote because the majority will ALWAYS vote to suppress the minority.
Do you have any idea how it feels to go to sleep married and wake up without knowing the fate of your marriage? Do you know what it feels like to be continuously put down for something you have no control over?Do you know what it feels like to go around and hear things like faggot, gay, and dyke being used as if they were not offense at all?
Don’t you realize how damaging this all is on the mental level? Do you have to spend your life looking at signs that say Homosexuals Are Possessed by Demons? I respect your right to be religious and believe in a higher power, why can’t you respect my right to for once in my life not feel like the world is against me? Even if you believe homosexuality is a choice and not some kind of genetic disposition, Christianity is a choice too. How would you feel if you were no longer allowed to adopt children for being Christian? How would you feel if you were no longer allowed to marry the love of your life simply for being Christian? Even as things stand now with Prop 8, you can bet I would be out there fighting just as hard to save your rights as a Christian as I was to preserve my rights to earn a right that many take for granted.
Sorry for the typos, was a bit rushed in trying to get all that out of my system.
I <3 you Sometimes….. all the time
My dears: I just read that Prop 8 is only winning by 500,000 votes and we still have 3 million absentee ballots to count. Does anyone know if that’s true? Thanks!
Uh, sorry, that was probably boneheaded of me to say. I never was great at math. Darn.
@ ThatLisa:
‘Keep your churchy shit out of my government.’ Hehehe separation of church and state FTW! Thanks, that made me giggle.
@Beet:
I have to say, this is probably one of the best posts I’ve seen from you (that despite the fact that I’m on this blog because I love the way you write ALL your posts!) And your reply to wpolochick was spot on.
I’m not American, so none of this should apply to me, but I support equality for ALL. That would be equALLity!
Gay Marriage is NOT a CIVIL RIGHTS issue. Same sex couples are afforded their civil rights via CIVIL UNIONS if they so choose.
@ Cami. I was thinking the same thing. “the people have spoken”….yea!!! But only if they get what they want.
I did not vote for Obama, but I’m NOT STILL CAMPAIGNING FOR MCCAIN. I accpet Obama as my President, and I’m very happy for him and happy to respect the decision of the people, even if it was different from mine.
Shut the fuck up. Get over it. You Lost. And. BTW. That is one poorly written and uninspiring petition.
Jesus and God are completely imaginary so I wouldn’t worry too much about what they may or may not ‘say’. Let’s focus on the facts – gay people should have exactly the same rights as everyone else, anything else is a human rights abuse. get with the program people.
@michelle
Yeah, I guess we’d all better just give up. OH WELL.
Yeah right. Sufferers of gross injustices don’t just GIVE UP and call it a day. If that were the case women still wouldn’t be able to vote. If you are fighting against real injustice you will continue fighting no matter how many times you get shot down. Gay marriage will be legalized. It’s a matter of when, not if.
“The Fight Starts Again” ???
Then bring it on BEET……
You don’t think we will continue to fight for our religion?
We should fully understand our religion. Fighting for our beliefs is a part of our religion. Those who love God and religion cannot deny that. Whoever denies even a minor tenet of our religion commits the gravest of sin.
Michelle, you idiot, Beet is not going to “fuck off” from her own blog. Why don’t you?
TSS, most religious people don’t know their own beliefs.
Think of how absurd it seems today to deny a black man the right to marry a white woman. Denying gay couples the right to marry will seem equally absurd in twenty or thirty years.
Beet that already seems absurd!! And BRILLIANT reply about the fountains :D
Why do people care if 2 men or 2 women want to get married? They won’t do it in the church, they’ll have nothing to do with the religion, they’re not murdering anyone, being nasty to anyone… what’s the problem? Idiots!
I will never in my life understand the hatred/fear/bigotry etc towards gay couples and them wanting to get married.
It just seems so strange to me that people who follow a religion that apparently preaches tolerance, forgiveness, good will and the like could be so hurtful and unjust to a group of people because the same book that tells you to love your fellow man tells you to hate people who have a different lifestyle to you.
And to the non-religious people who are against it, I feel sorry for you that you seem to have been brought up in an environment that taught you that it is ok to dislike (I’ll use this word as some people think HATE is harsh) someone because they are different.
TSS – what religion do you follow that tells you to force God’s will on others? I am a Christian, but I can only live God’s will out in my own life. I can pray for others, but I can’t MAKE them find salvation.
You figure I am committing a grave sin by not choosing to deny others their civil rights?
And can someone that is FOR prop 8 please tell me how it figures into the separation of church and state? Someone? Anyone?
hey guys and beet, i read ur blog religiously from AUS and was honestly moved to tears when u read that prop 8 was going to get through. I would like to encourage all of you who have stood up against this and to not be disheartened because even people in Australia want you to succeed against people with such prejudice. I amhoping and praying that one day soon people will stop being scared of people they dont understand or have things in common with…we are all equal and despite whom u find atractive deserve to be treated as equal.
BLESS U ALL! much love
“We should fully understand our religion. Fighting for our beliefs is a part of our religion. Those who love God and religion cannot deny that. Whoever denies even a minor tenet of our religion commits the gravest of sin.” ……
– Osama Bin Laden
ANYONE can use religion to influence and scare uneducated and ignorant people. It can never shake the evolution of individuals who are guided by intelligence and reasoning. I AM a Christian and I promise you, God will NEVER cast you into hell for allowing another man or woman to live their life and to do unto them as you would have them do unto you.
Proposition 8 is a DISGRACE to the Human Race.
Just like McCain said,”The people have spoken and they have spoken clearly”. This is not what the majority of the people want, that’s obvious. Get over it and move on. It may be one day but not today!
Whew, TSS. I am so used to your usually logical and sardonic posts, I was confused this morning when I read the first. Thanks for clarifying. That does sound a bit more like a world terrorist than one of my favorite celebrity blog posters!
Down with intolerance!
Luckily, under California law, you can start up another proposition in the next election cycle to annul the results of proposition 8. That’s the way to go.
Proposition 8 is the law now, but this is the time to marshal resources and get another proposition ready for the next ballot to annul this amendment.
Women’s suffrage took years. Integration and civil rights took years. This one may take some time, too. I guess we just have to keep on fighting for a while.
@ cami: I totally agree with you.
Apparently, the majority of people on this blog won’t be satisfied until we all turn into left wing atheists. Because, of course, it’s the “right” way. Talk about intolerance!
ALL of you guys, saying the “people voted, so it’s democracy”, are obviously not understanding the meaning of democracy.
WE don’t VOTE on civil rights issues!!! Can you imagine if men had the possibility to vote on whether or not women should have the right to vote? Or if whites had been given the choice to vote to give blacks equality? We would still have slaves, and women would have no voice or say.
This isn’t a gay or straight or religious issue. It’s just about equality. Saying that every single American have the same rights in the eyes of American law.
If churches, or synagogues, or whatever else don’t want to marry gays couples that’s fine, if you’re a christian and don’t believe in gay marriage….then don’t freakin’ marry someone of the same sex.
But let’s not create laws that write discrimination into the Constitution.
might i suggest that the gay community offers free blow jobs to any voters willing to vote for gay marriage the next go around? we can always fly in donkey punch if he’s not busy. just a thought.
@ Lala – None of us care if you are a left wing atheist or a right wing Christian or a middle of the road Mormon or gay or straight or smart or stupid or purple! We’re just shocked that you would use your religious beliefs to create discriminatory laws that take away others’ rights. For you to confuse our desire to see all citizens treated equally under the law with intolerance of your beliefs shows your lack of clarity on the basic tenets of our democracy.
And while we’re at it, I’m sure this is not going to be a popular comment, but I don’t understand why government doesn’t throw out marriage altogether (which is a religious institution) and just make all of us civil unions in the eyes of the law. Marriage as a legal institution completely steps over separation of church and state. It was put on the books back in the day when our society was so Puritan no one even saw that difference, and it’s outmoded for marriage to be a legal institution IMHO.
And for the record, I am a straight white married gal with Catholic leanings who is staunchly NO on Prop 8.
Michelle Says:
November 5th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
ITS OVER!
———————
Can we vote to sterilize raging idiots with poor logic and grammar skills? Michelle, for the good of humanity, I think your reproductive rights should be taken away, before your DNA taints any more of the human gene pool with mental illness and stupidity. For the love of God, you’re embarrassing.
LOL … I love the turd brains on here who say “move on”…
Picture all the gay people that got married from June until now in California standing there with their marriage licenses in their hand on Nov. 5….. “Oh well, the people dun voted… guess we gotta move on… so where do you wanna have lunch today?”
This IS how they “move on” you FUCKING MORONS…
So, I agree with you and everything.
But what is this petition *for*, exactly? I mean, what is it that you think the Governor can do? When you say “re-open Prop 8”, what does that even mean?
I think that gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to do the same things as everyone else . But I also do not think that it is right to keep overturning the will of the people, We have voted on this twice now and and the results are the same. Why do we vote if people like the 4 judges in San Francisco are going to keep overturning it …
Lynn, why don’t you move on, from this site. Now would be good.
Thanks for the link, Beet! I just signed!!
Interesting. The people have spoken! Welcome to America. Furthermore signing this patition will accomplish nothing. The governor or any other legislative body has no authity to do anything other than enforce a vote by a majority in the State of California. It’s time to move on, everyone seems very passionate, find a different cause, this one is over. All lawsuits will be thrown out of court on the grounds they are now unconstitutional. The supreme court cannot rule on this or they themselves will be in violation of costitutional law. Those are the FACTS.
how can people be so stupid
If you really want to know how Proposition 8 passed, look at the racial breakdown on the exit polls. Whites were largely split 50-50, the black and Hispanic communities are what sunk gay marriage.
I love how bigots are able to completely deny the fact that they are bigots by using excuses such as religion. For shame.
Facts, tank top? Really?
Curious what ‘facts’ lend themselves to the idea that a majority vote on a ballot proposition can rewrite the constitution to revoke the civil rights of any specific group of citizens.
It is the responsibility of the courts to interpret and uphold constitutional law, as they did in Brown v Board of Ed, as they did in overturning Prop 22, and , and as they will now proceed to do in overturning Prop 8. You clearly fell for the misinformation campaign of the Prop H8ers, and that’s a shame, because it means that we all have to pour more money and time into making this right.
Meantime, you get the chance to spend some time reading up on constitutional law.
@ Censorthis LO-fuckin-L that was a good one
@ Alex S. “your reproductive rights should be taken away”. EXCELLENT retort, which I will be stealing shamlessly, and using the next time it seems appropriate to deal with an idiot.
@ TSS People who dun got married before Tuesday, ARE STILL MARRIED.
@ Indigo You go first, I’ll be right behind ya! And….I believe your reproductive rights should be taken away before your DNA taints the
Oh Lynn, how Christianly of you. Jesus would be so proud. I am truly flattered that YOU think I am an idiot. Hello pot, this is the kettle speaking…
Take your bible and cram it up your thumper.
Everyone has pretty much covered why they are upset or elated at this result, so I won’t step into that fray.
I will point out though, one major difference between the Obama campaign and those against Proposition 8 has been the approach each campaign has taken to keep or win over the voters that were not in favor of Obama and against Prop. 8.
Generally speaking, Obama’s message was one of hope for EVERYONE, not just African-Americans or Democrats. From what I can tell (I am out of the US/CA and so I have only seen bits and pieces) those against Proposition 8’s position has been one reprimanding people for not agreeing with permitting gay marriage. Now, those anti-Prop 8 people are protesting and demonstrating the issue, filing lawsuits, and seeking petition support.
In my humble opinion, opponents of Proposition 8’s position and activity has been very disorganized and polarizing. Obviously, there were not enough votes to strike down Prop 8… so the anti-Prop 8 people should be (and should have from the beginning) working on swaying those voters. Telling people they are stupid and wrong will result in people digging their heels in to defend their vote (whether they felt strongly or not when casting their vote). Show those swing voters why its morally and fiscally beneficial for them to oppose Proposition 8… like Obama’s campaign, show EVERYONE why Proposition 8 does more harm than good to EVERYONE rather than just a specific population.
So what have we learned today???
Down Unda – will educate the American public on the discourse and harmful ramifications of Proposition 8….while
Beet – will wait for the dumb bitches to die.
………………both………good plans…and
Lynn – will spawn the children of the corn who will be raise in a house of hate and hypocrisy…
while Indigo’s husband will be the happiest bastard alive from all the kinky sex…..resulting in no children.
EvilBeetGossip is wise!
I am from California but living in another state. I have always been proud of where I am from until Prop 8 was passed. I am shocked at how prejudice is being accepted.
I wish people would just put themselves in other people shoes. Imagine being in love with someone wanting to be legally married to them and someone telling you that you can’t. . . legally.
Prejudice is wrong. End of story.
One of my pro Prop 8 friends told me that they are voting for Prop 8 because it is against the constitution for gay’s to marry. THAT IS WHY WE HAVE AMENDMENTS!! If we didn’t have amendments than slavery would still be legal.
Another one of my friends voted no to prop 8 because he thought it was to permit his child to learn that men can marry men and women can marry women in school. Now, I am not sure about right now but when I was in school even in sex ed I was never taught about marriage. The only thing they may have mentioned was that you should wait for marriage to have sex. Well, that pretty much covers everyone.
I hope they re open prop 8. I think that prejudice is wrong in all forms.
tank top…. when you are throwing around words as solid as “facts,” make sure you actually know them.
idiot.
And everyone who wants us to just “move on” can kiss my ass. Do you understand? We passionately care about this issue. I will never move on. It is not over. It is far from over. If I was to just “give up,” I could never live with myself.
I live in California. I am a straight 25 year-old female. And I went through 12 years of Catholic school. I was talk to love others, and to not judge. I have no idea what the hell everyone else’s churches were teaching them.
I do not mind arguments back and forth… but to ask us to give up is insane. I expect you intend to continue fighting, so that gay people cannot get married here (AGAIN). We are obviously going to do the same.
I would do the same for any other minority that was being treated unfairly…. years and years ago, you would have found a different me at women suffrage rallies… and fighting for African American to be treated as PEOPLE…..
I am not asking anyone to love gay people. You can still think being gay is wrong, whatever. It is about your personal opinion on whether or not gay is okay. It is your opinion on if everyone should have the same rights. That’s it.
for all you weirdo religious people, you are making baby Jesus cry. He wants us all to get along…
@ThatLisa: I’m glad that there are people like you that will have the stamina to keep fighting long after the 2008 election falls off of the front pages of the papers and webpages and blogs. I wholeheartedly applaud you for that… but: “for all you weirdo religious people, you are making baby Jesus cry. He wants us all to get along…” isn’t very helpful.
As I mentioned above, everyone has a vote and every vote counts. While you may not be able to sway the people you’ve classified as “weirdo religious people,” you can sway those not so far to the right with them… if you don’t alienate them. For every “religious weirdo” or zealot, there are those who fall somewhere in-between who will get their knickers in a knot and think “screw them if that’s the way they are.”
If I were in charge of a Anti-Proposition 8 group, I would organize everyone, obtain funding (Hollywood alone would provide not only a great source of $ but an awareness), set a campaign schedule and start educating people on why Proposition 8 is harmful to everyone, acknowledge that gay marriage doesn’t fall within how people traditionally thought of the “marriage” paradigm, but inform that gay marriage makes sense because (and I’d lay out all of the benefits to Californians – gay or otherwise). By doing so they would have the opportunity to personalize the issue and show how malignant Proposition 8 is.
That’s just me though… some people prefer the in-your-face campaigning. I just feel that sort of campaigning and name calling make the concept of gay marriage seem like a fight for something novel and new rather than merely the acceptance of something honest, responsible, and good (for everyone).
the baby Jesus comment was meant as a joke… i like ending with humor. cuz the whole thing is so damn depressing to me… and cuz it’s a funny blog. I (don’t think?) I’d be using such language posting comments on CNN or something.
and I don’t know. I’m not apologizing, I guess, just explaining.
and I don’t really care about bitching at people on a blog. It’s a wonderful way to vent frustrations, all nice and safe and anonymous on the internet, no? For all the people that disgust me with their discrimination on a daily basis… at least places like these, I can tell people to fuck off. No, I do not go around verbally attacking those who disagree with me in real life. But it’s different on blogs– they are not one-on-one conversations. It just feels good to GET IT OUT (for everyone, I’m sure, not just those on my side). I’m sure a lot of the pro-prop 8 aren’t nearly as vocal in person.
It all depends on the venue. If I was thoroughly involved in politics, I would be coming at it from a different angle. Obviously. As of right now, all I can do, is research how I can really actually help, and try my best.
And….. to keep me sane, tell people occasionally on the internet that they make me sick. I feel that I must. If not, I would end up snapping in real life.
This is not to say that I am completely passive in real life… I do not tolerate hateful speech or racial slurs (or any slurs) in my presence. I don’t care if you are my good friend… or my boss.. I will always stand up for what I believe in.
I hope this makes more sense. I understand what you mean, and it is very good advice. I think I’m just trying to explain where I am coming from.
While I think Prop 8 and it’s passage are ridiculous and saddening, I’m not despairing too much. The advances that the gay rights movement has made in such a short period of time are simply incredible. The Lawrence v. Texas ruling was made a mere five years ago. This country’s acceptance and celebration of it’s minorities is making old-fashioned prejudices seem increasingly irrelevant. A society like ours will inevitably move forward, not backwards.
In short: this is going to happen. We can do it. USA!
Now like some of the other people who have posted on here, I am a straight woman. I have a boyfriend and one day plan to get married. Yes, approving Prop 8 clearly takes away the rights of US citizens, so my question is why do so many people care? I fully believe and support peoples opinions, thats what is so “great” about our country, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press. But you do realize that many years ago we didn’t not have these rights. Yes the majority spoke and voted to pass prop 8, so i understand those people who feel compelled to reference the presidential election. No those people who voted for McCain will not write a petition trying to reopen the election, however that is like compairing apples and oranges. Yes they are both fruit, people got to vote for both prop 8 and the president, but who ever the president is doesn’t affect one group of people. It affects the country as a whole, while prop 8 affects only those people who have their rights taken away.
I fully support those who say we can’t vote on civil rights, because that is your opinion not mine. But let me ask you this, if we didn’t vote on civil rights then, women wouldn’t be able to vote. If any of you have seen the movie “Iron Jawed Angels” then you will know that when women lost while trying make their vote count, they didn’t say “Let’s get over it, we lost.” No they fought for it.
In giving up, we are saying that Martin Luther King Jr’s death was in vain for his fight for equality. Now your adding Robert F. Kennedy in that too, because he was an avid supporter of MLK and his death would be in vain too.
You do have a right to want to save your views of marriage but if a marriage is between a man and a woman, then how do you feel about polygamy? yes it’s between and man and a woman, but doesn’t that tarnish your “perfect” marriage views. And i would have to say that divorce makes the idea of marriage a joke. So we can’t allow a man and a man or a woman and a woman who have been together for decades get married, but we can allow a man and a woman who have known each other for 5 mins to get married?
Don’t you think that it’s sad majority of today’s youth don’t want to get married because they are affraid of ending up like their parents, divorced. I think that your “typical” couples have tarnished the idea of marriage because we have started to take advantage of it. If you really want the “idea” of marriage to be back to the way it was 50 years ago, or for the religious people, the way Jesus had intended it to be treated in the Bible, then let a gay couple get married because now a days i fully believe that they are truly the only people in our country that can actually appreciate what it means to be married. We have so many couples separating or divorcing because of adultery, spousal abuse or even worse just falling out of love, that should be proof enough of how heterosexual couples take advantage of the sanctity of marriage today.
So who ever might want prop 8 to pass then that is fine but just remember what the people who fought for you to be able to voice your opinion went through. They went through what gay people are going through now, they didn’t give up then and i wouldn’t expect them to give up now.
But this is just one persons opinion.
Unfortunately, in California, the voters can overrule pretty much anything they like. The Gov can’t do squat about the Prop.
So I guess the is to keep bringing this up until it goes the way you want it? How many times does the majority have to vote gay marriage down? It’s funny how when things go your way it was “The Will of the People”, but when the majority goes against your way you call a do over.
Get over it.
Uhm… well they would have to vote it down more than twice.
What was the ending result? like 51% to 48%…. We are not exactly talking like 90% to 10% here.. It was almost down the middle. It is a lot closer than it has been in the past, as well.
No, Frank you get it over. We are going to talk about it all we want. And we don’t really give a flying f*ck if you don’t like it.
If you do not like what the post is about, don’t read it. If the post was about “How to Lose Gays and Alienate Heathens” or ” Scripture Scrabble”, I wouldn’t read it. Oh, and a do over?? Really?? What are you in, 3rd grade?
scripture scrabble………
hahhahhahahahaha. sorry. that just cracked me up.
Damn I read the post wrong I thought we were talking about prepositions. My bad.
@ TSS and Indigo
Dear Idiots:
Just for the record, I have NEVER – in this post or any other on this site – ever spouted “relegion” “scripture” “the bible” or any other bible thumping reasoning for any of my beliefs. You just assign me that motive becuase, apparently for you, it will diminish my stated opinions (regardless of its ccuracy or not) SORRY. WRONG NUMBER.
For the record, however, I’m catholic. In catholic school we were taught that we shouldn’t read the bible without a priest t interpret it for us. so I never did.
KEEP FIGHTING PEOPLE!!!
Big protest rally Saturday Nov.8 at 6pm in LA at Sunset Junction. Info at http://www.afterprop8.org.
Lynn what are you talking about?? this is you right? this was on another one from this week. You’re spouting off about Christianity and God and church. I’m just confused. Unless there are two of you Lynns….. with the same views. posting on the same blog. Who knows
this is from the Um guys one………
Lynn Says:

TSS….premarital sex, stealing are SINS not one-way tickets to hell. You do not know Christianity. All people sin!! Iit’s what you do about it and do in the future as well as your relationship with Christ. Would you like to come to church with me this Sunday? I’ll save ya a seat and say a prayer for you in the meantime.
Homosexuality is a huge offense to God and any type of “gay marriageâ€, whatever that is, is a longgggggggg way off. Thank goodness. I have a big butt, however I don’t expect gov’t to mandate laws to keep people from calling me fat ass or giving me looks! Please, for the love of whatever you love, shut up about gay rights.
I mean. You just said homosexuality is a big offense to God (I disagree, but that’s not the point). Isn’t this using religion as a reasoning for your beliefs?
HELLLLLLLO
Whatever Lynn, you’re f*cking nuts. See ThatLisa’s post above – looks like bible thumping to me.
Dear Idiots: indigo and lisa.
AGIAN. I NEVER SPOUTED ANY RLEGIOUS RHETORIC. I don’t need to hide behind a bible to justify my opinions. And, For people who seem to spend an inordinate amount of time monitoring other people’s comments, you should have seen my recent comment (echoing another “regular’s” commnet who had the same same complaint) that there is ANOTHER LYNN who has shown up recently, and has been posting under “Lynn”.
I wish Beet would add a naming convention restriction on the site so there can be only “one” name used/assigned to one member to avoid the confusion.
Still in all. FUCK YOU.
dude, I only remembered the name because I was so pissed off at the original post by the ‘other’ Lynn. simmer down.
Just because I am not psychic doesn’t make me an idiot. I didn’t even know that people could post under the same names. SO-WWWWWY.
I mean, seriously, how would I have known that there were two (VAGUELY) like-minded Lynn posting comments on two separate threads, both against gay marriage? Dude, that’s probably why everyone else was answering you in the way they did. They assuming you were the same Lynn would was saying very homophobic sh*t on the other one.
And for your judgement of me, I say fuck you back, for being such a dramatic bitch. But of course, in a kind manner. I don’t know why you are getting all pissy on me. I even posted the comment so you would know what I was referring to. A simple “Oh actually that’s not even me” would have sufficed. Don’t get your panties all in a twist. Oh, and that’s the only thing I said to you, and I apparently, wasn’t even referring to you, so why the anger towards me? You should be mad at other Lynn.
And what’s funny is I actually agree with your “For the record, however, I’m catholic. In catholic school we were taught that we shouldn’t read the bible without a priest t interpret it for us. so I never did.”<< I was raised Catholic too, and that’s what I was taught.
So, Lynn, if it’s not religion that causes you to be against gay marriage, what is it? Is it just because you think the majority should always prevail, or is it because you think homosexuals shouldn’t get married. Or is it both?
I’m not being snarky. I really want to know.
ah, crap. I WAS being snarky. jk is better at this than I am. I always get too pissy to make a decent point.
I’m a professor. I’ve had years of practice suppressing my snarkiness.
ah, well kudos to you :)
I’m a student and a bartender. So, really, my snarkiness is pretty much running wild.
LOL. Man that Lisa always playing the eternal victim. I was so pissed off. I am not psychic. I didn’t even know. How would I have known. Everyone else was. I don’t know why you are getting all pissy on me. The only thing I said to you. Why the anger towards me. You should be mad at…A simple would have sufficed.
Excuses excuses excuses. I was . They were. You should have. You did ME wrong.
YOU SOUND LIKE AN IMMATURE SHELTERED INNOCENT LITTLE WENCH. NOT PISSY. JUST IMMATURE.
Can you stop dudeing us to death. Thanks wench.
@ Word.
LOL As I was reading, I thought Jesus Christ….what a bunch of whiny dribble….DUDE, I am not even responding to this. Thanks for an insightful, funny retort.
@ JK
As I stated above, I believe Gay Marriage is NOT a CIVIL RIGHTS issue. Same sex couples are afforded their civil rights via CIVIL UNIONS if they so choose. I also believe “marriage”, as an institution was and should be intended to be between a man and a woman. I also get concerned about what I percieve as a slippery slope this represents as it is trying to re-write the consitituon and bill of rights to legislate around sex. BAD BAD IDEA.
And that, is my final word on topic, as it has become nauseating.
Lisa, you may now climb back up on your soap box. Waaaa Waaaaa
So, just for clarification are you the big butted Lynn or the size yet to be determined butted Lynn? Oh well, guess it doesn’t matter, either way you’re an a$$.
I’m sorry that you and whomever in your organization are angry for the recent decision. It sounds that you are full of hate. I hate no one and I believe in Jesus Christ as our savior. For the natural order of things and to become a populous world, procreation is necessary. Procreation in the most natural way is by a male with a female. Just because science can exclude one of the sexes to create a baby, doesn’t make it sexually right.
Marriage was something adopted by humans (and religion) to identify that bond. With the fact that procreation has brought us this far in the world and beyond with millions of individual characteristics, is truly amazing. Yet if we were Hermaphrodites and procreated like worms, then individual characteristics become extinct and our progression would be nil.
On another hand, to compare Gay rights to the Civil Rights Movement is an insult to all races, not just African Americans. Civil Rights was to give RACIAL equality, not freedom of choice for SEXUAL ENGAGEMENT. What’s next? Are we to allow sexual engagement between an adult and a minor, say around 6 years old? Let us not open the door for more sexual deviation!
To hate the religious movement because of the passing of the law is absurd. Even in ancient Rome, Greece and any other civilization, marriage was between a man and a woman. Even the non-religious of today consider marriage to be between a man and woman. No one says you cannot marry, but to redefine legal marriage is like redefining procreation. Grant it, science is trying to redefine that as well.
I have friends that are homosexual. My sister is a homosexual. I hate none of them. Why do you hate those who voted yes to this proposition?
Please have consenting gay sexual relations with legal partners; but there is no comparison to a man-woman marriage.
I could go on and on, but until you realize that there are more important things in this world to worry about than the definition of marriage, it’s futile. You lost (twice) in a democratic way because someone felt that the people should decide. They decided, and now since you didn’t get your way, you think that aint right and your going to fight it until you do get your way. Well I didn’t vote for Obama, and 57 million people didn’t vote for Obama. So according to the same philosophy, we should take it to the US Suppreme Court and have the elections all over again. . . UNTIL McCain wins. Children act the same way. Please tell me our society is better than a spoiled child and recognizes DEMOCRACY!
I for “One” am against redefining Marriage.
sorry for trying to explain myself?? Okay.
I am far from sheltered but I guess that doesn’t matter.
dude word dude lynn dude eat me.
I guess that is immature; you’re right.
and who uses the word wench? ARRRRRRRRRRRHHGHHH thee a pirate?
and I like my soap box. The rallies and protests have been fun.
