Baton Twirlers Suspended for Performing to “I Kissed a Girl”

I live in a rather liberal part of the country. And when people are like, “Oh my God, who are these people voting for McCain? It’s insane to me how anyone could vote for him,” I’m just like, “Flyover states, people. Flyover states.” Like the little town of Van, Texas, where three high-school baton twirlers were suspended from future performances for twirling to Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.”

“The school is way over-reacting,” said twirler Jordan Downey, 17, who will now have to sit on the sidelines during two football games and a pep rally as punishment. “I honestly don’t understand the big hype about the song.”

You can check out clips of the scandalous performance (warning: not actually scandalous at all) and hear Jordan talk about the suspension here.

How very far we haven’t come.

NB: No, this isn’t a photo of the actual girls in question. It’s just a much more fun photo to look at.

  • i wouldn’t consider myself a liberal but it is pretty ridiculous to get suspended for something so little. though i dont get how its so crazy that people voting for mccain. no matter what opinions someone has about something or whether or not they are in favor for a certain candidate really isnt for someone to question, well only if that candidate happens to be a crazy, racist, mass murderer or something.

  • When i was in high school some guy sang the Hanukkah song by Adam Sandler.
He was suspended because, they say, it was offensive and it promoted drug and alcohol use…
I don’t know I don’t think it was offensive, and there’s nothing wrong with gin and tonica, or marijuannca

  • Holy crap! They are putting a LOT more into majorettes than they did when I was in school. That’s a big girl.

  • While I love my home state of Texas, there are way to many fucking conservatives around here… Small towns like the 1 I live in, are very hostile places if your a liberal or just different(gay) from everyone else.

  • A safer choice would have been the song Your So Gay and You Don’t Even Like Boys. Is this the same as the girls who were suspended for using the word vagina from the vagina monologues in NY? That was over reaching too.

  • WOW! You really should have used a picture of those girls, Im thinking their suspension from the team was a result of the coach trying to find some valid reason to get them off it.

  • @ erin, I know! Back in my day if you were a certain size you didn’t qualify. Muffin top used to be a bad thing, now it’s a statement. Cruise past a school (before you think I’m a perv, I’m picking up my kids and Attending games where my niece is a cheerleader) and you will see the new chic — pants below the gut, shirt tied in the back to show off more of the belly

  • These comments are funny…

“Back in my dayyy… we had a whippersnapper like her…We called her Hootenanny Myrtle. She used to play sex songs like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy…. and show her ankles like she was one of them there hooly girls….dad gummit!”

  • Wow! They look ready for Jenna Jameson’s path. Even Katie Perry said that song has invited un-welcomed advances from women.
It is the coach’s fault. When I heard the song being played in my car, I had the option to turn the station, which I did. The citizens of Van, Texas came out to see a game and support young hopefuls. They did not deserve to have supporters of California’s prop 8 evade their fun.
This is just poor judgment. They are just so many wonderful songs of camaraderie to play at a sport event. Why was this annoying song chosen?

  • FIRST off! It has nothing to do with the stupid song. They asked their sponsor if they could dance to it and she said no. They purposely switched the music behind her back for the shock factor! They only have to miss a couple of games. It is a good lesson learned. They are supposed to be leaders in their school and their band. One thing I have learned in life are that breaking rules has consequences. Luckily noone was hurt in this instance. Hopefully they will think twice next time.
