Today's Evil Beet Gossip

R.I.P. Paul Newman

The world of cinema lost an icon on Friday, as 83-year-old Paul Newman passed away at his home in Westport, Connecticut.

My first introduction to Paul Newman came as a tween, after watching Reality Bites. There’s that part in it where Ethan Hawke is talking about how nobody can eat fifty eggs. I asked my dad what that meant, and he put me in the car, drove me to the video store and rented Cool Hand Luke. I loved every minute of it.

There’s a lot I could say about Mr. Newman, but CNN has put together a pretty impressive piece on his accomplishments, his character and his life. Read it here.

They don’t make ’em like you anymore, Mr. Newman. You’ll be missed.

  • My mother introduced me to him very early because they were both from the same small town in Ohio. He has always been the picture of perfection to me. RIP Mr. Newman.

  • His acting was a bit before my time, but I am a frequent buyer of the Newman’s Own Organics line.
Our prayers go out to his family.
    RIP

  • Awww, that was sweet of you to post.
I’m gonna go rent that movie now…
Ima get me some salad dressing too…

  • A real class act. Gifted, talented actor who led an exemplary life. I loved his movies and respected him as a man. God bless you and your family Mr. Newman aka Butch Cassidy and may you rest in peace.

  • I remember seeing Paul Newman in my little nowherevilles home town as a young girl on the campaign trail for..was it Jack or Robert Kennedy? Integrity, compassion, consistency, a man who loved his wife and children and never betrayed them. A fine actor and an extraordinarily generous man. Truly, today’s actors and celebrities just don’t measure up, do they. What a legacy he leaves. Walk in beauty, Paul.

  • wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone could live his or her life to the fullest the way paul newman did? acting, family, community commitment, race car driving, amazing.

and then, there is the post right after this one where we get to see michael lohan in all his glory.

the dichotomy of these two men is absolutely astounding. i’m left with the overwhelming feeling that the wrong man has died.

    rip

  • you guys need to remember what a saint paul newman was next time you are talking shit about sienna miller or angelina jolie- because he left his wife and 3 small children for his co-star, joanne woodward. some marriages just don’t work out. people 50 years ago were calling joanne woodward a homewrecker too but now she’s “devoted wife of 50 yrs” and he is st. paul.
yay for true love, just realize it doesn’t always happen the first time.

  • first: so what happened, did he die after they stuffed his face with the last egg or what?

second: i so wanted to find a picture of his first wife, or any info about her, but i couldn’t, does anyone have a link maybe?

  • Hey Beet… Just back from Bali and missing you. :-) So sad about Paul, he was a gentleman and a hell of an actor.

I’ve missed you Beet… how have you been? E-mail me! :-)

  • seriously, i feel bad for his first wife (who’s probably not around any more, but still)

what must it feel/have felt like being the EX wife of someone whose SECOND marriage everyone keeps gushing about

my mind just immediately goes there, i’m weird like that

and no picture of her, no nothing, just her name

  • Mr Newman climbed high in a world where the ladder had been tossed into a vault for which the combination had been lost.

He will always be remembered as a class act and one who left a legacy of style while demonstrating what talent is all about…

  • I never really got into his movies until I watched Slapshot (I’m really into Ice Hockey). I’ve been quoting lines from that movie since I first watched it – I think I was like 9 or 10 when I first discovered it. That movie got me into a whole new genre of movies that I, then, discounted as old and silly.
Anyways; I’m totally bummed that Paul Newman passed.
He had so much zest and ingenuity beyond his film career. It’s like seeing an extraordinary Victorian house being torn down knowing that some cookie cutter condo is going to occupy the space. Not the most fitting way to describe my feelings but saddened is the best way I can put it.

  • > DP…don’t you remember??? God is there to comfort the family, silly!

Ah yes, I forget. He kills ’em first then comforts.

Sure works in mysterious ways. Sort of like Dexter the lovable serial killer.

  • it’s hard not to admire Paul Newman for putting his money to work in such productive ways, such as his Newman’s Own line–high quality stuff and the proceeds go to good causes… very smart.
