So I sat down to write a post about Cheri Oteri’s father, who was tragically murdered in his Nashville home this weekend, but I really hate covering shit like that. Like, it’s so incredibly sad, it’s not her fault, and, while it’s an intriguing story, I feel dirty trying to use it to get page views. So if you care, the full story is here.
Instead, I’m going to focus on something more appropriate: the sluttification of one Miley Cyrus.
The photographer behind the shots, Annie Liebowitz, has decided to weigh in herself. Says Annie:
“I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted,” she said in a statement. “Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.â€
Yeah, Annie. Shot with very little makeup. Also: very little clothing.
And where would any of this be without the Christian Coalition of America? Normally I’d be like “What the fuck does the Christian Coalition have to do with any of this?” but Miley’s been so outspoken about her relationship with Jesus and her religion that I suppose they do get to have a say here.
“Disney should reprimand her,” says their spokesperson. “Miley should say it was a mistake and that kids have to be very careful at such a young age. Kids look up to her. Something needs to be done.”
Sigh.
This is going to be the best-selling issue of Vanity Fair in years, and it’s done wonders toward launching Miley’s career for an adult audience. Well-played, my friends.

Yes, yes- she is role model for little girls and all of that, blah, blah. As a father, I certainly plan on instilling in my daughter that there are better role models than tween sensations to look up to, like teachers, engineers, doctors, scientists, and lawyers. Ok, maybe not lawyers.
If you think this girl is a bad example for your children, then be a parent- turn off the tv and don’t let them watch her.
Personally, I think she’s gonna be HOT in about 3 years, and I can’t wait for the sex tape. (Yes, M&Vers, I’m being facetious, that was a joke…)

Yep, didn’t say it wasn’t suggestive, just said you can see worse out and about. I’m just *sure* no other 15 year olds (or younger) have posted racy photos on their MySpace pages, etc… Geez, she’s not blowing the photographer or anything, its just a little skin! Despite what the M&Vers think, 15 is a pretty normal age to start exploring your sexuality.
Sex sells, kids- I’d bet she’ll make a nice chunk of change out of all this. Actually, pretty savvy and buisiness-minded for a 15 year old. If people disapprove so magnanimously, stop buying her crap! I’m fairly sure just the opposite will happen, though!
It wouldn’t be such a big deal if Miley didn’t say that she was a Christian and a friggin’ role model!
Again, it’s just another prostitot. She’s been posting her own sex tease pics on myspace for a while. I think both of her parents are really terrible stage moms and I also think she’s going to have a sad end. You just don’t do this to kids. She’s just a kid.
Miley Cyrus’s bread is more than buttered by catering to a ‘tween audience and she and her handlers would be silly to actively steer her away from that at the tender age of 15, when she has years to go before she can be considered and adult and million$ more to make by remaining a kid for a while longer.
Her Myspace bra pics were 100 times worse than these and she took them and put them on the internet herself (from what I gather). All these show is a scrawny back. I think her in her underwear vamping it up on her Hello Kitty sheets was a little more suggestive and innappropriate.

Yeah she’s only 15, but I agree w/ Norman here-she’s showing her back, OH MY!!! It’s a suggestive photo & you know when you come down to it, this is exactly what they all wanted out of it:for people to talk…which we are!
Her MySpace pics were worse, it’s just that these came right after so it seems worse. I think we all kinda knew she was going to be the next Lindsay-uh-ohhhh! ;)

I think this is the biggest over reaction over a fucking picture that has ever occurred.
Maybe i’m biased because I go to art school and I’m used to stuff like it.
But I think the public has a serious problem with accepting things.
This isn’t even REMOTELY sexual, and anyone who thinks it is, is a pervert that thinks a 15 year old girl is sexually attractive.

While I appreciate that you agree with me, I will agree to disagree with you re: my use of the word magnanimous. In addition to meaning “generous in forgiving insult or injury,” magnanamous may also mean “nobly high-minded”. Feel free to look it up! My use in this context was, again, meant to be facetious.
Perhaps what I wrote wasn’t quite sarcastic enough; let me expound! It is ironic that the masses (mainly the Morals and Values crowd) come down on MRC from their “High Horse,” and want her to suffer some “consequences,” yet run out and buy her videos, CDs, log on to MySpace to see the “scandalous” pics, and pick up a copy of Vanity Fair while they are waitning in the WalMart checkout line. The best punishement they could dole out would be to NOT open their wallets.

It’s strange that you can have artistic nude photographs (no not child porn) of very young children (under 15) and then people over 18 but any age between that, even more so if the subject is famous, is suddenly horrible

The photo is art, and it was shot by ANNIE LIEBOWITZ! i’d trust her with anything.
so miley took a few photos that some narrow minded people object to.It was her choice and it dont make her a bad person or a bad role model.It makes her human.get over your selves and get a life shes not out partying and getting drunk or getting busted with drugs.Like some stars her age.she seems to be a pretty leval headed teenager.And in my opinion she still the best role model out there for kids and teens..I have a niece 9 and she wants to be just like Miley.

In my opinion, this is Not a “beautiful” photo. It looks like she is about to do a 360 with her head and spew pea soup. However, if this pix is a big deal, did anybody see her and her dad on the country music awards show a couple of weeks ago? Her outfit was totally inappropriate for a young girl. The dress was open in front to the waist and her shoes were straight out of Frederick’s of Hollywood! If she is going to be a role model for young girls, let’s be consistant here! If I had a daughter, I wouldn’t let her out of the house in that get-up. She looked like a hooker!
