And once again, it seems like the people have decided it’s time to get upset over an Elle magazine cover. Fans raged when Melissa McCarthy was depicted on the cover of Elle covered up in a large coat, thinking the implication was that McCarthy was considered too fat to be seen on the cover of a high fashion magazine without her body being hidden. Ms. McCarthy responded that not only did she like the cover, but she picked the coat.
A very similar thing is happening right now with Mindy Kaling, a celeb that really divides you guys into the love or hate section. Ms. Kaling was shot for a cover along with 3 other women (Zooey Deschanel, Amy Poehler, and Allison Williams) for the “Women in TV” issue. Fans are pointing out that she’s the only one whose entire body isn’t shown, whereas the other 3 thin actresses are shot in full color showing their full bodies.
Ms. Kaling gets that you want to defend her, but it’s actually hurting her feelings. Here’s what she said about the controversy on Letterman, via E! News:
So I was, for the first time in my career, on the cover of a fashion magazine, which is such an awesome, nice thing…It felt great! I saw the cover, I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I thought, ‘I look so, like, beautiful,’ and I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve never looked better. I feel like I look like a movie star on it!’
[So] I didn’t expect this reaction. The shot is of me is like this [she framed her face with her hands], showing my face. There was a weird reaction, which was, ‘Does Elle magazine think Mindy’s not skinny enough to show her whole body, standing up from head to toe?’ [Like], ‘Oh, I thought [the cover] was nice, I guess. What, Elle, you can’t put her big, fat body on the magazine? Why? ‘Cause she’s just fat and gruesome? Why can’t we look at her beautiful fat body?'”
I think her cover is the nicest one — it’s definitely the most artistic, and Kaling really looks fantastic. But I do think it’s odd that hers is the only cover in black and white and framed so differently. Elle hasn’t commented on it yet.
What do you guys think?
maybe they have a thing with putting a black woman on the cover so they did it in contrast so it wasnt so obvious…? i dunno. its weird
black and white shots look nicer in general
Mindy Kaling is Indian as in from India. She is not black.
I think she looks stunning. Plus even if her being overweight – which she is not – was an issue, I think that this photo is cropped low enough that you can obviously see she looks great. It’s the most visually interesting of the bunch and makes me want to pick it up first over the others so, I think this is a win for her.
I love when people think it is their place to “stand up” for whoever and whatever and it turns out to destroy the person or thing they think it is up to them to defend. Wait and see how the person feels before jumping to their defense jack asses !!
