Did you have to take a moment to take in that headline too? Ok, good, I’m glad I’m not alone in this.
But yeah, Amy Winehouse was in the process of adopting the 10-year-old girl pictured above, and it wasn’t just a fleeting notion on her part. Let’s just check out the full heartbreaking story from TMZ:
Amy Winehouse was preparing to adopt a 10-year-old girl from the island of St. Lucia, the girl and her grandmother told a British paper today.
The girl — Dannika Augustine — says she met the singer during one of Amy’s visits to the island over the past few years. She says she was living in poverty with her single mom when Amy took an interest in her.
Dannika tells The Sunday Mirror, “Amy was already my mother. I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me … She was the most amazing person and I was looking forward to living with her here or in London. I cannot believe she is gone. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
Dannika’s grandmother Marjorie says she spoke to Amy a few weeks ago and that Amy planned to return to St. Lucia next month. She told the paper, “Amy wanted to have a child so bad. If she had not died, there is no doubt she would be here in St Lucia completing the adoption process. There is no way she would have done what she did to herself if Dannika was with her.”
Both of Dannika’s parents had signed off on the adoption.
Just when I thought this whole thing couldn’t get any sadder, it turns out some poor little girl called Amy her mother. And I know it probably would have been a worrisome situation, having Amy Winehouse responsible for a child, but damn, this story really hits me hard. Is anybody else feeling that?

Her cooter was probably too poisoned to bear children. Do you really think that woman would ever have been responsible enough to raise a child? Wake up and smell the coffee.
I’m not seeing how she would have passed a home study. Adopting internationally requires health exams, mental health assessments, a home safety check, etc. As an actively recovering addict, I can’t see how a social worker would approve her. Maybe after being clean for a few years, but not while she is still abusing alcohol.
Whoa… that is way harsh…
Maybe she wanted to be a mom more than she wanted to be a star.
Although perhaps, sadly enough, she, like so many others, wanted a child for the wrong reasons…. unconditional love…
which doesn’t happen because children aren’t pets… they grow up and confront you with your shit….
Amy should have gotten a dog… Animals can really help you heal.
I was gonna say sortof the same thing, Nicole. Adopting a human being is not like going to the animal shelter and bringing home a stray. And….as a pet lover, I wouldn’t consider Winehouse a good candidate to care for even the most independent cat. It is sad that (if the story is true) a child got all tangled up in another Winehouse clusterf*ck but in the long run nine chances out of ten this scenario would not have ended well for the girl.
yeah… i know how it goes when you’re all tangled up it your love for drugs, and the decisions you make all MAUDLIN.
Maudlin doesn’t work when you have to be up all night with a sick baby.
But I also sense with AW a real and visceral love for kids, perhaps because she felt her own childhood was lost, even though she had loving parents. OH GOD… Amy seems to be crystallizing a lot of shit for a lot of people.
My Cat Loves TV…. I am glad that people love animals so much more than when I was child…
I was born in 57… and, well I was always pretty freaked out…by the fact that I generally loved animals more than most people…
Adoption kills.
please elaborate….
Just ask Amy.
