The Duggar Family

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar welcomed baby number 19 last night, a girl named Josie Brooklyn. Wow. I was hoping for a much crazier “J” name. “Josie Brooklyn” is actually kind of hip. They sure have come up with some good ones in the past, though (Jinger is probably my favorite.) She weighs in at a very dainty 1 pound, 6 ounces, which for the record, is smaller than my chihuahua was when I got him. Currently Josie is in stable condition, but is in the intensive-care unit for safety.

If you’ll remember from last week, Michelle was actually afraid she was going to go in to labor even sooner and had to put off surgery for gallstone issues until after the birth. She was given medication that helped hold her over for a couple days, but Josie was ready to be born.

The Duggar family is always a controversial topic on here. I respect their rights, but I don’t understand their lifestyle. Also, if Michelle can no longer healthily carry her babies, it’s probably time for her to call it quits. I think she’s had enough.

  • Wow, my pet rat just had 19 babies today, so it must be karma! Too bad I’ll be feeding some of them to my hungry pet snake later tonight.

  • My teenagers and I have enjoyed viewing several episodes of the Duggard family and find them absolutely delightful! The parents have done a wonderful joy teaching them manners, spirituality, and self-respect. I admire them and believe they certaintly know how to raise positive kids. They have no debt and the father lectures about living without debt. All the children assist with the household chores and the love they have for eachother is heart-warming. My kids and I feel they are a beautiful example of a functioning family, and I will continue to enjoy their show!

    • I can’t understand how they don’t have any debt… where does all that money come from? 21 people… that’s a lot of mouths to feed… not to mention clothe. And I remember seeing a snippet where Michelle says she uses 2 industrial size washers and dryers pretty much constantly throughout the day to keep up with all the clothes… I can’t imagine the water bill.

      • Probably “donations” from other members of their wacky church group. Which doesn’t rankle people like welfare but amounts to the same thing. That’s my assumption. Having said that, I’m well aware of what they say about assumption. But I really don’t see where else the income would be coming from. Maybe TLC now..

      • They make their own clothes (and then hand them down), cook all of their own meals and they actually built most of their house themselves.
        They’re actually pretty self sufficient. Creepy, but self sufficient.

      • They had 18 kids before the TV show. Duggar runs his own business and frugality allows them to afford their large family. They are not religious nuts. Their haters are anti-religious bigots.

        As long as they are not getting welfare, I don’t care how many kids they have.

Based on their “great values” each of them will have 19 kids so thats 19 squared which is 361 times 2 becuase of their spouses which makes 722 plus 2 because of the parents so u have a grand total of 722. Sounds like they can start a colony in space.

  • I think they’re just fine. They aren’t letting their kids get into trouble, or anything. It’s their choice, and as long as they’re able to keep raising the kids in a stable and happy environment, why should we have a problem with it?

    • The only thing I really have a problem with is their choice to keep having this many kids when she is this old and her body has already gone through so much. I respect their decision to not want to use birth control since they seem to be able to support and care for all of their kids, I just wonder about the health risks at this stage in her life. If you aren’t going to protect yourself at least have the respect for yourself, your children and your future to maybe hold back on the sex. Luckily this baby/pregnancy is the first one that seems to have had any problems, but if they have any more I guarantee that this will be the first of many. Her body just can’t handle it any more and I think it’s time for her to pull the plug. Besides that, more power to them as long as they can provide for the kids in both love and financial stability.

      • She started needing c-sections a couple of births ago.
        If you need to start having babies cut out of you after delivering more than ten babies vaginally, it’s time to question how healthy what you’re doing really is.
        And I don’t care how healthy they say this baby is, it weighs less than 2 pounds. That is not healthy. She’s going to face a host of possible health problems for the next few years.
        It’s time to stop filling the quiver.

      • She needed c-sections for 2 or 3 of the kids (I forget how many) because they were breech, that isn’t related to age.

      • Hey, if she works it right she can have a permanent tic-tac-toe board on her belly for her kids to play with.

      • With proper care, all these pregnancies will not ruin her health.

        I’m just amazed that they can continually have sex with all those kids in the house. I have one and my wife and I have to sometimes put “relations” off.

  • I’m a liberal feminist spiritualist anti-super religious, but honestly they’re good people. At least they take care of all of the kids and they don’t depend on the state for welfare. On an environmental level, all of their closed are already used and they live pretty simply. I agree though, SHE NEEDS TO STOP! I’m surprised her uterus hasn’t fallen out yet.

  • I put money on another pregnancy announcement before 2010. I’m pregnant right now and this shit is overrated. There’s something wrong with this lady.

    • I second that emotion. I’ve had 4 kids and that was hard enough, I think this lady’s a little wacko. It’s like those people that have 50 cats who “love” them all and just had to rescue them… it’s laudable on some level but you really have to question the motivation. Frankly, these people scare the shit out of me.

  • i have ten brothers and sisters and it is SO FUN growing up with so many siblings. i’m happy for the duggars, they’ve managed to stay true to their beliefs and are a great inspiration for so many people!

  • Although I think it’s kind of wacky to want to have 19 children, I don’t know that this one was premature means a start to anything in the “trouble having children” area. With that many kids, I’m surprised they haven’t had any problems earlier just from a statistical perspective. You look at enough births and something is bound to happen sooner or later.

      • That’s not happiness.. that’s mania. And yeah, it *is* crazy to do absolutely nothing but pump out kids. Maybe one of them would feel special to have their hair done properly. Maybe the mother would benefit from some time for herself. Too much of anything is unhealthy in one way or another. These people are psychologically fucked up. My great grandmother (Catholic) had 21 kids b/c in those days birth control was pretty much non-existant and very frowned upon. My grandmother grew up MISERABLE in that house. No abuse, no starvation – just absolutely no individual attention and had to share everything. No privacy, no expectation that your things would be respected, saw her elder sister as more of a mother than her own mother. Father was working CONSTANTLY to feed them all. I think these Duggars with that house full of Manson-esque goofy manic smiles are not right in the head. Period.

      • Well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man. :) Hell, maybe they aren’t happy. I hope they are. Maybe it is what they want, but unless you ARE them you can’t know for sure that they are unhappy. Live and let live. It obviously isn’t the way you’d raise your family, but they aren’t doing anything illegal and none of them is physically or verbally abused, so until one of them cries out for help, let them be.

  • Interesting that other races, especially hispanics, can overpopulate without any grief, but a white family does it and the shit hits the fan. If a white family does it, they’re freaks. If a hispanic or black family does it, they’re just extending they’re bloodline and heritage. I’m proud of this family and glad they have the resources to make it work and encourage other white couples to get busy having more children.

      • I don’t think I was. Take away all the unwanted pregnancies, and pregnancies of drug addicts and irresponsible parents and let the responsible have as many kids as they want, I say.

        Unfortunately, until someone slips some hardcore infertility drug into the crack supply I can’t see that happening.

      • Lady, I agree with you about taking away all the unwanted pregnancies and those of irresponsible parents but I don’t agree that just because the Duggars wanted those kids makes them responsible. 19 (soon 20) kids is one big welfare check when TLC cancels the show. And before the show the Duggars were living more off of donations from the community than JB’s real estate–see how well that is going now. Also 19 kids and mother with no real world experience is not a good idea. Once TLC leaves It will only take one bad day to get rid of Jim-Bob and the whole family is screwed. No wishing anyone harm but I’ve seen enough death to know that life is not as strong as most people think it is.

  • The Quiverfull movement which the Duggar’s are fully involved don’t believe in stopping births even if the babies keep dying or the mother dies. The mother’s sole purpose is to breed, if she can’t Father will find another woman to continue on. If you read about the Quiverfull it’s very pretty horrible and woman are nothing more than brood mares in human form.

    I do wish the best for the baby but any time you have a baby that weighs that little, if you survive it’s with terrible disabilities. I bet Michelle’s pregnant before the Spring of ’10.

      Jinxy, you may want to check your facts. There are many many premies out there that grow up to be extremely healthy children.

      My own twins were born 3 months early and weighed just over a pound each. This morning, they are running around the house full force – rambunctious 4 years old who are of average height and weight. You never would have known they were in the NICU for a month.

      Yes, there are premies that have disabilities due to not having the proper formation of vital organs, I am not denying that.

      Furthermore, I do wish for Mrs. Duggar to call it quits with the pregnancies. Not because I think their beliefs are bunk, but because I fear for her safety. I very much enjoy the Duggars and believe wholeheartedly that they are living a just and pure life. They are raising a family full of decent, caring, polite and loving children. There needs to be more parents out there who actually pay attention to their children instead of coming home and watching 4 hours of television while the kid is pushed off as a nuisance and told to go entertain themselves.

      • If you’ve seen the show, you know that those kids aren’t getting much attention from the parents. They get a lot of attention from whatever sibling is assigned to them. It’s not possible to give very much of yourself to each child when you have that many of them.

      • I think the point is though, that they get attention at all, which is more than can be said from other families.

      • I think it’s a big assumption that most families don’t pay attention to their kids.
        Of course, you see those kids in Target trailing after their parents with a PSP glued to their face, but not most of them.

        I think most families probably get more interaction with their kids than the Duggars do with any of theirs. The numbers just work against them in this case.
        Sibling attention is good, but it’s not a good substitute for parental attention.

      • I agree with you this time, Alzaetia. I have to question how much parenting Jim Bob and Michelle are actually doing of each child. It seems unfair to expect the older children to take so much responsibility for the younger ones. Then again, in that super restrictive environment it is not like they have anything else to do besides laundry and bible reading.

      • Oh come on, those kids have to wait in line to get a unfeeling hug from mom. The real parents are the older kids, mostly the girls, that are forced into raising their mother’s charges while they themselves receive no attention. The parents certainly love the attention they get from having all those kids but they don’t love the children anymore than one can love an acquaintance. They can’t, they don’t know there kids. The children raise and entertain themselves while the parents are lost in the glory of their own little world.

  • One thing you can say about the Duggars is that they take care of their own. Even though I do not subscribe to their lifestyle I believe in their right to live it the way they want to. The seem to be wonderful people but I do feel the girls especially are a bit repressed. I truly hope that the newest baby is okay and hopefully Michelle will retire from childbirthing and enjoy her children.

  • What is scary is that the girls are not encouraged to go to College, have any kind of career. It’s all about getting married and pumping out kids. No individuality is encouraged. Older kids being responsible for younger kids. No socializing with the ‘outside’ world other than being on TLC and doing interviews. Gotta love that money coming in.

  • I have only seen their show once. I am amazed at all the quiver full families I have met. They all homeschool, make their clothing, cook from scratch, and seem to be well adjusted. I can’t imagine that. I have 4 kids and that was my limit. I love having what some say is a large family. I think it is none of our business how many children a self supporting family has. We might not understand it but so what. I looked Duggar up on the net. He is a realtor. He owns several commercial properties that have no mortgages. I say this man is VERY responsible. When you don’t spend your money on stuff like TV’s, new clothes just because you can, junk food, trips to fast food, sit down restaurant food, and fancy cars/with $2000 worth of rims; you can afford to do more at home. Remember everyone, my feminist self says shut up and leave my body alone. It is none of your business unless I am on government aid. That is another story……. I think we should drug test and not pay for all the babies to be born to welfare parents. They should be required to not have kids if we have to pay for them. My taxes are high enough. Those girls are not prepared for the real world, they have no idea what reality is like. Like this one episode where the oldest gets married, his wife has no idea about sex, and starts freaking out because she couldnt get pregnant. Whatever their religion is is retarded, the worst part is that they think they are “normal”.
